History & Tradition

Our school is named in honour of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The name Santa Maria comes from the Latin “Sancta Maria”, or “Holy Mary”, which is part of an ancient prayer, the “Hail Mary.”

A special devotion to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is part of the core of Catholic doctrine and practice. The Bible and the church teach that Jesus would be born only through the cooperation of Mary. Also, at the end of his life, when Jesus was dying on the cross, he asked Mary to be the mother of the apostle John, and in his person, of all humanity.

A Catholic environment:

The school community has a unique role in the life of the child, distinct from that of the home and parish. It is equipped to reinforce the child in the world of learning. The school provides a community in which the child continues to learn to pray. It provides an opportunity for the youth to encounter God in the discoveries of the human mind and integrate faith and learning. The school is capable of showing relationships between the academics and almighty God. With every discovery made by the child in school, is the discovery of God.
