History & Tradition

  • St. Albert Catholic School was officially opened as an eight-classroom open-concept school, at its present site, in March of 1970.
  • Initially, the families of St. Albert were affiliated with both St. Lawrence and St. Rose of Lima Churches.
  • At the present time, the school is able to provide for the spiritual development of the students through the celebration of liturgies and paraliturgies, sacramental preparation and regularly scheduled visits from the pastor of St. Maria Goretti Church.
  • The school was named after St. Albert the Great, a humble Dominican monk, scholar and teacher. St. Albert was born in 1206. Little is known of his early life. History records that he studied the physical and natural sciences and philosophy. One of his students was the great philosopher of the church, St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • St. Albert students traditionally enroll in the local Catholic high schools: Jean Vanier, Neil McNeil, Notre Dame,  and Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary Schools.
  • Almost all of our graduates attend Catholic high schools.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

St. Albert's maintains a Catholic environment by observance of regular liturgies, para liturgies and monthly rosary visitations by the Rosary Apostolate, by strict adherence to Religion and Family Life programs, and by ensuring that Catholic values permeate all school activities.

Some students require modified programming to meet individual needs.  Students are presented by teachers at joint team meetings which are attended by parents, school staff and support staff. Together, the joint team prescribes modifications intended to enhance learning. Where required, special testing may be done with parental consent and placement in special programs may result.

The code of behaviour for the school is presently contained in the Student Agenda which is distributed to each student in Grade 1 to 8 in September.   Traditional values of self-respect and respect for others are instilled in our students.  Children are encouraged to display common courtesy to other students, staff and guests in the school.  The staff assists the children by providing counselling and regular class discussions on the topics of bullying and acceptable behaviour.

Extra-curricular and co-curricular programs

  • St. Albert's takes part in a wide variety of extra-curricular programs. e.g. Junior and Intermediate W5H, house league soccer and basketball, intramural baseball, volleyball, soccer, badminton, basketball and track and field and cross-country.
  • St. Albert has an active chess club and takes part in the Scarborough  tournament
  • Enrichment activities include visits to the Markham Fair, St. Michael's Cathedral, the Science Centre, Green Acres Farms, Ryerson Theatre, and Roy Thompson Hall.  As well as having school visits by Reptilia, Scarborough Historical Museum, and Skookie Productions.

Safe arrival

Our safe arrival program is a high priority for St. Albert Catholic School. To ensure student safety, parents/guardians will be contacted if a student is absent and the school has not been notified prior to morning and afternoon sessions. We encourage parents to report their child(ren)'s absence before 9:00 a.m.  Students are not permitted to leave with anyone but their parents unless prior notification has been given, or neighbours, family and friends report to the office with a signed permission form.
