St.
Angela Catholic School opened in 1973 and is currently one of three
elementary schools in St. Andrew's parish.
Our school was named after St. Angela Merici, one of the great
figures in the history of Catholic education. Born
in 1474 at Desenzano, a small town in Italy, St. Angela became convinced
that the great need of her time was better instruction for young girls in
the rudiments of religion. She
began her educational work by gathering the little girls of the town into
her home daily and teaching them the elements of Christianity.
Her work was extremely successful and in 1535 she founded the
Ursuline Order, the first teaching order of women established by the
Church. For four centuries
the Ursuline Sisters have carried on the work of educating young girls in
the spirit of their saintly Foundress.
Our Catholic schools contribute to the formation of our children in their faith life. In partnership with the home and parish our students grow in knowledge of prayer, scripture and Catholic teaching. The following initiatives and activities represent some of the ways we intend to serve our local Catholic school community.

Tools for Tolerance- Promoting Love and Respect for All

The presenters of the Tools for Tolerance activities: Rita Plescia, Michelle Donoghue-Stanford and Odie Pariselli (absent: Dino Fantinato)
The teachers at St. Angela Catholic School were involved in an interactive adventure on the February P.A. day. This was a follow-up to the Tools for Tolerance workshop in Los Angeles in December. As participants in this transforming experience, Odie Pariselli (principal) and three teachers (Dino Fantinato, Michelle Donoghue-Stanford and Rita Plescia) were privileged to journey with Canadian teachers and other stake holders in the field of education. The Tools for Tolerance program promotes human rights, social justice and social action and challenges all educators to make a difference in the world by starting with small changes in their own classrooms. Through prayer, a Power Point presentation on Cultural Proficiency and interactive involvement (Telling Our Stories About Diversity) the St. Angela staff explored the importance of creating an environment where each person is treated with dignity, respect and love.

St. Angela Leads the Way in Faith
and Character Development

The St. Angela Catholic School community has been involved in Faith and Character Development since September 2007, when the school implemented “Followers of Christ”, a program that earned the school the Michael Carty Award. This initiative has provided the staff with the vehicle to advance the shared vision of an exemplary school in which everyone is present to each other with compassion and love. Each month a Christian value is introduced and all at St. Angela’s are encouraged to demonstrate and practise it. The school aligned its virtue for the month of January with the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s initiative of courage. At a school gathering, the students were encouraged to show courage and strive to make a difference in the community. Special posters were provided for teachers to display in their rooms. To celebrate their strivings to imitate Christ, a student was chosen from each class and honoured at a monthly Eucharistic celebration. Certificates were presented by Father Carlos and Mrs. Pariselli. Students also received a religious memento and had their pictures taken. These pictures are displayed in the school’s Followers of Christ showcase by the office and student names will be published in the school newsletter.
