St. Anthony Catholic School was established by the Sisters of Loretto more than 90 years ago. Over the years St. Anthony has served the children of various immigrants groups, starting with the Irish and continuing with Italians, Portuguese, Central and South Americans. At present the majority of students are Canadians of Portuguese heritage, plus a smaller number of Canadians whose heritage is Central and South American. St. Anthony School is named in honour of St. Anthony of Padua. His contact with some Franciscans, inspired him to become a Franciscan. He was sent to Italy to preach and teach. He died at the age of 36, and was canonized within the year. St. Anthony School continues to be proud of its historic past, its academic and athletic excellence, its Christian environment, and its ties with the community and parish. We are very proud of the many outstanding graduates who have contributed to the community, city, country and church since its establishment by the Sister of Loretto.
A newly renovated and expanded facility opened in the spring of 2006.
St. Anthony School is committed to providing every student with the best possible educational opportunities, within a Catholic environment. We hold the basic belief that each and every individual is a valued creation of God; with gifts to share and needs which allow us to receive and validate our mission of fostering self esteem, respect for life and helping one another in the pursuit of excellence to be the best that we can be to reach our potential. The underpinnings to our school life are daily prayer, religious instruction, excellence, relationships and harmony with the self, others and the environment which are key to happiness and success.
We strive to provide a safe and welcoming environment for staff, students and parents and the community at large. Our behaviour code, security procedures and safe arrival program contribute to this goal.
Our child-centred programs and varied evaluation strategies ensure student needs, strengths and interests are being acknowledged and are met. Curriculum initiatives are in keeping with the current educational innovations. Outcomes-based education, focuses on what skills students are expected to have developed at different stages of their schooling and which standards take into account the range of student performances that can be expected at stages of learning. Curriculum and expectations are addressed and are modified to meet the needs of students at level, below level and above level through a variety of instructional, remediation and enrichment activities. The school-based support process and inter-disciplinary team assist in providing suggestions for appropriate placement and modification of programs. Programs are further modified for exceptional students as perceived by identification, placement and review committee or teacher determination.
The individual needs of our students are met in a variety of ways:
Co-curricular activities ranging from choir, instrumental music, W5H, to a variety of team and individual sports help enrich and enhance our school day. As a school community we have a common goal to provide our students with the education that will best equip them to live successfully and responsibly in a complex and changing world. As the needs of students change so will the programs offered at St. Anthony be adapted to respond to those needs.
