History & Tradition

St. Augustine Catholic School is located in an area west of Jane Street, north of Finch Avenue, and south of Steeles Avenue. We are on the western boundary of York University.

The school was opened in 1969 to serve a community whose predominant ethnic heritage was Italian. Over the past 26 years there has been a dramatic change in the ethnic and racial composition of our school. Sixty percent of our students speak a language other than English at home, and 20% of our students have been in Canada for two years or less. Our student body is culturally and ethnicly diverse, but our community is bound together as one family in the Fatherhood of God through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, strengthened by His Word and nourished by His Eucharist.

St. Augustine of Canterbury was one of 40 monks sent by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century to convert what is now England to Christianity. Augustine converted King Ethelbert and as bishop worked hard to spread Christianity throughout England. He is known as the “Apostle of the English”. His feast day is May 28.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Our students have come from many different countries, some with very little or no prior formal schooling. Many have endured dangerous and life-threatening circumstances as they made their way to Canada from war-torn countries. We have mobilized as a community to provide all of our students with a welcoming and safe environment.

Our greatest academic challenge has been to address the literacy and numeracy skills of all of our students. Three full-time teachers work on developing receptive and expressive language skills in our newly arrived students. In addition we have four-and-a-half resource classes where teachers deal with a wide range of learning exceptionalities.

A safe and welcoming environment has always been a high priority at St. Augustine School. A conflict mediation and resolution program, run by trained student mediators for students has been in operation for the last four years. The program is based on the Gospel values of community, peace, justice, and charity.

The behaviour and discipline code articulates acceptable behaviour and spells out the consequences of unacceptable behaviour. Our school-based support team (SBST) along with our social worker, and our psychologist provide assistance for students experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties. The Toronto Police Department has been very supportive in helping us to maintain a safe environment.

The staff is very caring and responsive to the needs of the students. Students experiencing academic difficulties are referred to SBST meetings where programming changes result, or referrals to community agencies are made.

With the demands of 21st century life facing us, teachers, challenge and encourage students to excel in language, mathematics, science, and computer-based learning program at St. Francis De Sales Catholic School.

To expand the experience base of our students, excursions are an integral part of our curriculum. Students visit sites such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Toronto Zoo, Young Peoples' Theatre, various farms and conservation areas. Grade 8 students plan a yearly trip to Ottawa or Quebec City.

There is also a very active athletic schedule where school teams are involved in soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis, cross-country, and track and field.

Students also participate in general knowledge (W5H) competitions, teen forum and challenge to debate.
