St. Bartholomew Catholic School was opened in 1969. It was named after Bartholomew, also known as Nathaniel, who was one of the first followers of Jesus.
Bartholomew became one of our Lord's faithful apostles who preached the gospel of Jesus at the risk of his life. He went to India, Armenia and other lands, until ultimately he gave his life for his faith.
On June 5, 1994 St. Bartholomew Catholic School celebrated its 25th anniversary.
There has always been a close association between St. Bartholomew Catholic School and St. Bartholomew Church as the pastors have been eager to work with the school. The close proximity of both buildings helps this relationship flourish.
St. Bartholomew Catholic School provides a Catholic Christian environment where each
day begins and ends with prayers. Religious pictures, symbols and wall hangings are
visible throughout the school. Students write their own prayers, read scripture, visit the
church, make religious art displays and have classroom celebrations. School masses and
liturgical celebrations prepared by the students are held approximately once a month.
Parents are always welcome to these celebrations. Catholic values are infused into the school
curriculum.
The family life and the religious education programs form an integral part of the curriculum and are shared with the parents through the parent books that accompany these programs.
St. Bartholomew Catholic School provides a safe and welcoming environment. To help achieve this, a behaviour code is in effect. This code is reproduced each year in the Agenda books carried by children from grades one to eight. All discipline situations are handled individually. Positive behaviour and the reinforcement of good behaviour are stressed. To recognize students who have demonstrated outstanding conduct or personal qualities, we have monthly student awards given out at a special assembly.
A safe arrival program is in effect to ensure that all students are accounted for, either at home or at school. If your child is going to be absent from school, please advise our secretary before 9:15 a.m.
The Toronto Catholic District School Board follows Ministry curriculum and policy guidelines. Through the aid of workshops, teachers at St. Bartholomew plan a curriculum with an emphasis on objectives that will meet the needs of our students and the expectations of the Ontario curriculum.
Computers are a valuable tool that helps students develop thinking skills, research skills and helps them with the presentation of their work. Computers (with access to the Internet) and printers are available in each classroom. We are in the process of assembling a small computer lab in the library. This year we hope to launch a school-based website. Stay tuned!
Students who require extra help with their academic studies are discussed at our school-based support team meetings. The purpose of these meetings is to plan program modifications and monitor progress. Those students who are identified as exceptional by an identification, placement and review committee (IPRC) receive small group instruction from our special education teacher. Parents are involved in this process and are invited to participate in the meetings and decisions about their child. Students in grades 5 - 8 who are identified as gifted attend a one-day-a-week program at a nearby gifted centre. Students who require extra help to learn English receive a program in small groups from our English as a second language teacher for varying amounts of time, depending on need. The itinerant guidance teacher or the school social worker helps students who require emotional and social guidance. Every attempt is made to access resources and programs that will help each child meet his/her learning needs.
Each year our school band enters the TCDSB Music Education Festival. When we have the opportunity, one of our intermediate classes attends a three to five day program at a TCDSB outdoor education facility or in a city like Ottawa where children experience curriculum first-hand.
In addition to the regular day, the teachers offer many extra-curricular activities to meet students' interests and needs. Sport teams, cross-country, track and field, choir, W5H, student council, and soccer house leagues are some examples. These activities take place before or after school hours or at lunchtime.
