St. Catherine Catholic School is a small elementary school located in an established suburban community in north-central Toronto. It was opened in 1967 and provides educational services for children from junior kindergarten through grade 8. Demographically, the community consists of a mixture of single-family residences, townhouses and high-rise rental buildings. A majority of our families are from Middle Eastern heritage. In the late 80s, the enrollment was on the decline and at that time the boundaries were changed to include former Precious Blood students. September 1994 saw the total number of students exceeding 200 for the first time in the history of St. Catherine.
The patron saint of St. Catherine is St. Catherine Laboure.
St. Catherine is associated with the parish of Precious Blood in Scarborough. The pastor, the school and the home, work closely together to administer to the sacramental needs of the students. As the school is situated on the border of two other parishes, many of the students and their families are active in Annunciation and St. Bonaventure parishes.
Students presently enrolled in the school have parents who are former graduates. In 1992 celebrations were held to mark 25 years in the life of St. Catherine School. A video was prepared to provide a history of the school. One student deigned a logo for school T-shirts. The open house was well attended by past and present staff and students.
St. Catherine
School provides a learning environment where models of Gospel values and
Catholic doctrines, teachings and beliefs are an integral part of the daily
life of the school. Religious instruction, family life programs and value
education provide students with a firm foundation of their faith
development. The following are living the faith activities planned
throughout the year: organizing liturgical celebrations, preparing food
baskets for the needy at Christmas, and participating in ShareLife and
Remembrance Day poppy campaigns.
We are constantly striving to provide a safe and welcoming environment throughout our community. Health and safety issues are highlighted in our communication with staff, students and their families. Children are made aware of, and frequently reminded of, specific school rules, which have been established for the benefit of all students. Our code of behaviour, based on dignity and respect for all, is communicated through newsletters, assemblies, the Catholic School Advisory Council and personal interactions. Our safe arrival program is an on-going process for the protection of all students.
St. Catherine School also partnered with Ontario Physical Health & Education Association (OPHEA) in 2001 to become an “Active School”. We walk one kilometre a day, engage in physical exercise and promote healthy nutrition. St. Catherine’s active school program continues to work against current Ontario concerns of childhood obesity and Type II Diabetes.
Enrichment activities are part of classroom planning. This provides students with the opportunities for individualized attention to meet their needs. Our annual book fair also encourages students to appreciate the written word. Our efforts continue to concentrate on computer literacy and our on-going goal to upgrade our computers and software.
Modifications in program continue to be of great importance, given the diversity of language, learning needs and social considerations. This is addressed in the regular program and through our special education services. Student success is recognized and celebrated at monthly assemblies and in the monthly school newsletter.
We have a variety of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities in this school. Some of these are choir, talent show, showcase of the arts, Christmas concert, volleyball, skating, track and field and house leagues as well as a Grandparent’s Tea for Mother’s Day and a crowning of Our Lady of May.
