History & Tradition

Opened in the fall of 1952, St. Charles Catholic School was one of the first Catholic schools established in the south central area of North York. At the time it served a newly established development in a rural setting. During the late 50s, 60s, and 70s and well into the 80s the school met the needs of a predominantly Italian Canadian community. As of recent years it reflects a more diverse group in an established and older community.

The patron of the school, St. Charles Borromeo, devoted his life to the welfare of the church. He was instrumental in reassembling the Council of Trent in 1562. His feast day is celebrated November 4th.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Students at St. Charles not only share much in common but also bring their unique characteristics and needs to the school. Academics and doing their best in school work are highly emphasized. Homework is encouraged, although the amount varies depending on the grade of the student.

At St. Charles the diverse needs of students are met in the following ways:

  • In-class program modification
  • Use of library
  • Use of computer
  • Remediation
  • English as a second language in the school
  • Special education classes such as speech, learning disabled, behaviour

Part of the process to meet these needs involves Early identification and classroom teacher referrals. In recent years in conjunction with the school association St. Charles school has taken measures to ensure the safety of students. A safe arrival program exists whereby parents can contact the school 24 hours a day. Parents are contacted if the school does not hear from the parents.

Our discipline code encourages self discipline and has the following expectations of our students:

  • Respect the dignity of self and others.
  • Don't put yourself down or fail to attempt things.
  • Don't cause physical harm to others.
  • Fighting will not be used as a way to solve problems.
  • Use of profane language is unacceptable.
  • Don't offend others by making reference to their appearance, colour or family.
  • Include others in our play.
  • Fully cooperate with all teachers.
  • Speak with courtesy to teachers and other staff members.
  • Be honest in our dealings with others even when we are at fault.
  • Always do your best work.
  • Come to school fully prepared with homework and other assignments completed.
  • Respect the property of others and the school.
  • Don't take or damage the property of others.
  • Don't do damage to the school.
  • Be where you're expected to be.
  • Walk quietly in hallways and stairs.
  • Be at school each day and on time.
  • Protect our environment through reducing, reusing and recycling and especially to show more care for the lunch we eat.
  • Show respect for God's church and His sacraments and the priest who serves Him.

To complement the academic program students are encouraged to take part in other school activities. School teams compete in soccer (outdoor, indoor) volleyball; basketball, chess, baseball, track and field, cross country, W5H, public speaking and other activities during the school year.
