French Immersion From Senior Kindergarten

History & Tradition

St. Cyril, for whom our school was named, converted to Christianity against the laws of the government, and despite opposition from his family. Because of his strong faith, he refused to renounce Christ, and was martyred by being cast into a fire. We aspire to follow St. Cyril's strong commitment to Christ.

St. Cyril Catholic School is one of three schools in St. Edward's Parish.

St. Cyril was built in 1958 and extended in 1966 to include a third floor. In 1985 a French immersion program was developed and commenced at the senior kindergarten level.

During the 1993-94 school year, a before- and after-school program was begun to facilitate the needs of working parents. At the request of parents, the program was extended to include full day child care in 1995. The school has, over the years, established strong ties with the church and the community at large. Many of the students presently enrolled in our school have parents who are former St. Cyril graduates.

St. Cyril School has an active community that shares in the education process. Parents volunteer in the classes as well as in the library. They assist with coaching and transportation for extra-curricular sports and activities, and even help us run house leagues. Parents are always in attendance to support school masses, sports events, science fairs, etc.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

We at St. Cyril's provide programs to develop leadership skills, as well as to encourage involvement by students. We have a rich program of intramural as well as extra-curricular activities which includes sports as well as academics. A variety of sports and W5H are offered in house leagues as well as at the competitive level. Chess club, student council, student newspaper, office monitors, class monitors, and technology club are some of the many opportunities provided. We participate in science conferences, spoken arts programs (which include such things as debating, poetry reading, storytelling etc.), mathematics competitions, Olympics, skiing and skating programs. Our arts program is extended to provide theatre presentations, professional artists, choirs, as well as dance and drama.

Classroom programs are modified to ensure inclusion of all students. Special needs students are integrated into the regular classroom. Resource help is provided for students in the English and French streams as well as for new Canadians. Our teacher librarian provides “partners in action” programs to enhance the curriculum. We ensure a secure, non-threatening environment for children so that learning will be maximized.

We evaluate children at the kindergarten level through the early identification process so that intervention may begin at an early age. We also maintain a school-based support team through which teachers share ideas for program modification and intervention techniques to assist students within the regular classroom. An identification diagnostic team made up of a psychiatrist, and education resource teachers and a social worker are supplied to us by the school board.

Communication is the key to a shared partnership in education, and parents are kept informed of progress on an ongoing basis as well as at formal conferences. Monthly newsletters are sent home to assist in keeping parents informed about school activities and directions.

St. Cyril School prides itself on being a single unit, where intermediate students can mix with kindergarten students at work and at play. Reading buddies, partners on long walks to church, monitors, and helpers at recess support this relationship. At St. Cyril's, students care about one another, with older students acting as role models for the younger ones.

As part of providing a safe and welcoming environment, we maintain two qualified teachers with first aid training. We also provide conflict management programs to the students. Programs in fire and street safety are also provided with the help of community services.

In an environment where change is an ongoing process, the staff is kept up to date through workshops, in-services and curriculum writing. Expertise on staff is shared through school workshops.

To provide extra help for needy students, we solicit the assistance of parent volunteers, co-op students from the high school or college, pre-education students and French monitors.
