St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic School is one of three Ukrainian Catholic schools within the Toronto Catholic District School Board. It was founded in 1975 as the result of the vision and commitment of the pastor of St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Rt. Rev. John Tataryn, who recognized the need to ensure the future of the Ukrainian Catholic community by providing its children with the opportunity to learn about and appreciate their unique and rich spiritual and cultural heritage. The school was guided and nurtured from its infancy stages to the present largely through the untiring and dedicated efforts of its founding principal, Sister Rachel Tataryn, SSMI, who served the school community in that capacity for many years. Today the school is an integral part of the St. Demetrius community, intimately linked with the Church, Demetrius Residence, and the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre. St. Demetrius Catholic School celebrated its 25th anniversary in the year 2000.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Our school's mission is to offer our students a solid spiritual, academic and cultural formation in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, challenging them to achieve excellence in a stimulating, safe and welcoming environment. Together with the Catholic School Advisory Council we are striving to provide our students with the most current educational and technological resources available to us through the Ministry of Education and the school board to enhance their learning opportunities.

Students are very involved in the liturgical and cultural life of the parish as well as the community at large. Our intermediate students participate in an outreach program of service to the residents of the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre. Our school community supports the work of St. John the Compassionate Mission through fundraising initiatives. Students from our school participate in a full range of athletic and intellectual competitions organized by our Board as well as outside organizations.

Toronto West Team Chess Championship
Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School was the host of the Toronto West Team Chess Championship for Elementary Schools.  Close to 200 students from Grades 1-8 filled the halls, theatre and library of the new state-of-the-art building to battle each other in the classic game of strategy and concentration.  Many students were awed not only by the idea of being in a high school, but also by the size of the tournament:  14 schools, divided into 38 divisional teams vying for the title of champion.  The results, after up to five hours of non-stop competition were: Primary Division-- 1^st Place - St. Demetrius Catholic School and Junior Division--1^st Place - St. Demetrius Catholic School.
