History and Traditions

stelizabethseton.JPG (57891 bytes)St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School opened its doors in the fall of 1985. It has often been described as a showplace of learning, blending very well with the flavour of the neighbourhood. The design is not only beautiful, it is functional. The open area or atrium is most impressive.

The school continues the tradition of successfully serving children and their parents in the local area, due to the cooperative efforts of a team of supportive, enthusiastic and industrious people. Imitation of the strength exhibited by our patron saint, St. Elizabeth Seton is of paramount importance in all school activities.

St. Elizabeth Seton lived a full life. She was a poet, translator, teacher and musician. She was a wife, mother of five children, mother superior and principal. She woke up early, toiled diligently all day and went to bed late each night. She founded the Sisters of Charity.

Elizabeth Ann Seton was a remarkable woman, a powerful individual who believed in God's will--a treasure of the Church, a treasure of our school.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Staff have spent considerable time developing courses that are relevant to the students and that are congruent with Ministry of Education and Training Guidelines. There is a very active school-based support team (SBST) which meets regularly to discuss individual students and their needs. Total integration with some withdrawal of special education students is a goal. One-to-one assistance in specific subject areas for some students is available.

The three divisions (primary, junior and intermediate), headed by individual chairpersons, have worked extensively on the programs and development of special theme days for students with activity-based, student-centered activities.

All teachers are making an effort to become computer literate and incorporate computers into their weekly program. A chairperson (teacher) heads this area and is responsible for the overall maintenance of the computers. There are also a number of computer resource teachers on staff. Computers Across the Curriculum is a goal that is being met.

Guidance services and social work services are available. All intermediate teachers co-operate in helping students choose their high school programs.

A good balance of activities is provided for the students. The gym is always occupied along with the library and study areas. Extra-curricular activities are numerous with future plans to add chess, French and computer clubs.

The staff, with input from the school association (now Catholic School Advisory Council), has developed a school code of behaviour. This is distributed each fall to all families. The parents also receive updates on a regular basis via a school newsletter, which keeps them well informed of all school events. Curriculum night, parent-teacher interviews, Sunday liturgies and Saturday student choir are well supported by parents, staff and students. There is a strong CSAC, which works well with school staff and the local parish priest.

The students have a good understanding of the rules and regulations as they are regularly reinforced by a caring staff. There is a sense of cooperation for the welfare of the students. The environment is safe.

The school's timetable is organized so that students are constantly supervised through lunch, recess, etc. A safe arrival program is in place, including a daily attendance check on each student.

Students in the junior and intermediate grades assist in the supervision of the primary students through a class monitor procedure.

Conferences on students are held regularly. Suggestions are made and implemented for students in difficulty.

Anecdotal reporting to parents is completed twice a year, with an interim report also completed twice a year. Teachers are in constant contact with parents in regards to their child's progress.

The French department is very active and conscientious. Students are made to feel that French is as important as English, mathematics or any other subject.

Toronto Catholic District School Board Celebrates Exemplary Practices
Each year, the Toronto Catholic District School Board is proud to acknowledge innovative programs and special projects at local schools with the TCDSB Exemplary Practice Award. The winners of the ninth annual awards were honoured at a special ceremony and reception in April. Among the winners is:

St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School (Scarborough): Information Evening for grade 7 & 8 Parents--This provided information to parents of grade 7 & 8 students in an effort to ensure a smooth transition to high school. Parents were given information regarding the difficulty of moving from grade 8 to 9, how to choose appropriate course levels and post-secondary destinations/program pathways.

“Each year we are impressed with the variety and quality of submissions that we receive for consideration for the Exemplary Practice Awards. It reminds us of the amazing things that can be accomplished when the many partners in Catholic education focus their energies on a common goal,” says Director of Education Kevin Kobus. “These winners have distinguished themselves by boldly daring to implement new approaches to learning, and who have succeeded in their endeavours. It is our hope that others will be inspired in their pursuit of new and innovative ideas that will continue to build upon the quality of education in our Catholic schools.”
