History & Tradition

St. Eugene Catholic School opened in September, 1970 to serve the needs of children living in the Islington Avenue, Richview Side Road area of Weston.  Located in the former City of Etobicoke, this open complex school was built to accommodate approximately 340 students from kindergarten to grade 8.

St. Eugene is one of three schools in All Saints Parish and is named after Pope Eugene I, a Roman brought up in the service of the Church who reigned from 654 AD to 657 AD.  Historians describe him as being “outstanding for his sanctity” and as “gentle and affable with the poor”.  Reverend Martin O’Grady, the pastor of All Saints Church, suggested the name to the Board in memory of his late father, the late Martin Eugene O’Grady.  The school celebrated 25 years of service to the community in 1995.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

St. Eugene School community, formed by Catholic beliefs and traditions, strives to help individual learners to achieve their highest potential in intellectual, emotional, social, moral, cultural and physical development—all in the context of the faith dimension.  The students are provided with a challenging, safe and enjoyable learning environment in which diversity and achievement are respected and celebrated within a school community rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ.  The Gospel values espoused by the Catholic church are central to the daily experience of staff and students.  The students participate in regular school liturgies, which complement the religious education program.

To meet the diverse needs, abilities, and interests of our students, a variety of programs and services are available at St. Eugene: core French classes, vocal music, instrumental music, learning disabled, and general special education classes.  Many of our students in the junior and intermediate grades attend the gifted program at Transfiguration Catholic School.  All students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extra-curricular activities including school sports teams and W5H.  We share our gifts in many ways including The Terry Fox Run, canned food drives and supporting charitable organizations.

Our staff is strongly committed to providing programs based on Catholic teaching congruent with expectations and TCDSB initiatives.  The acquisition by students of core skills in numeracy, literacy and the provision of a safe, orderly learning environment where respect for others and respect for authority are important to us here at St. Eugene.

Within each class there is a balance of individual, small group and large group instruction and the teachers try to program to meet students’ needs.  The Kindergarten to grade 3 classes focus language instruction within a Balanced Literacy--four (4) Blocks approach to instruction.  Junior and Intermediate (grades 4-6, 7-8) classes strive to build upon and enhance the skills taught in the earlier grades.  Religion and Family Life instruction are central to each day.

As a school community, we recognize the need to provide our students with the education which will equip them to live successfully and responsibly in a complex and changing world.
