    History & Tradition

stfedelis.JPG (39523 bytes)St. Fidelis Catholic School was established in September 1971, when the temporary Port-o-pacs (portable classrooms) were set up to serve as the school. The permanent building was established in September 1972 and Mr. M. Costello was the first principal. The school enrollment in 1971 was 297. Father Pollo was the first pastor of St. Fidelis Church when it was established in 1982.

Our school name, St. Fidelis, was selected by Father Louis of the Capuchin Brothers at the Friary of St. Philip Neri Church. St. Fidelis, whose baptismal name was Mark Rey, was born in Sigmaringen, Germany in 1578. In 1610, he received his doctorate of law. He became known for his honesty and advocacy for the poor and suffering. St. Fidelis gave up his law practice and entered the Capuchin branch of the Franciscans because of his concern for the poor. In 1622 he was beaten to death by a mob because he refused to deny his faith.

St. Fidelis School is located in a community that is indeed unique. Its stability is demonstrated through the commitment of many parents who settled in the same area where they themselves were raised as children.

Meeting the Diverse Needs of Our Students...

St. Fidelis School staff address the diverse needs of the students in the following ways:

    • With a Christ-centered curriculum and the liturgical and paraliturgical celebrations organized by the Christian Development Committee and staff, the school shares Gospel values and concern for those who are less fortunate. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is the school's philosophy.
    • To ensure a safe school environment, the peace and conflict resolution program has been implemented for the entire school. At every recess there are six conflict managers on duty as well as three teachers supervising the students. The parents, teachers and the students have been in-serviced in the strategies to promote peace and resolve conflict.
    • As part of the peace and conflict resolution program, the school has a code of student behaviour with clearly stated consequences.
    • The school has a safe arrival program.
    • The staff and administration have spent much time, effort and money to develop math strands, and the purchase of manipulative and related equipment.
    • The school has a B.E.A.R. (Be Energetic and Read) program for students in the primary division to motivate pupils to read.
    • The school has a science club organized by parents.
    • The school is involved in a variety of activities such as the junior and intermediate W5H, cross-country, science fair, drama, spoken arts, cultural presentations, international languages presentations, pride award and also the various sports activities such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis and track and field.
    • Computer in-service is provided to staff and students.
    • Programs are reviewed annually to determine how they meet the needs of the students.
    • Teachers modify programs to meet the needs of the students.
    • School-based support team teacher, joint team, special education (remedial, gifted), P.E.P.'s are strategies used to meet the diverse needs of our students.
