St. Francis Xavier Catholic School is located in the
parish of St. Fidelis. Some members of our school community also attend St. Bernard
Parish, but our students traditionally have received the sacraments of first communion and
confirmation through St. Fidelis Church. School liturgies are well-planned by a staff
liturgical committee and take place both at the church and at the school during the school
and liturgical calendar year.
Our school is named after the Jesuit priest who lived from 1506 until 1552. Francis Xavier was a colleague of Ignatius of Loyola and did missionary work for the church in both India and Japan. His missionary work carried him throughout many of the islands of the south seas. He was on his way to a new posting in China when Francis fell ill with fever and died. He was canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622 as St. Francis Xavier and December 3 was fixed as his feast day.
St. Francis Xavier Catholic School was opened in 1959. Building additions in 1964 and 1981 brought it to its present size. The school celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1984, the year of the papal visit.
In any elementary school, serving the needs of students
from ages four to14, from junior kindergarten through grade 8 is a major challenge. St.
Francis Xavier School is no exception. We have students of different ages and genders at
our school, students who are at varying stages of physical, emotional and intellectual
development as well as from a wide variety of linguistic and ethnic backgrounds.
School and class programs, while organized by grade levels, do have flexibility to them. Students displaying needs beyond the scope of the regular class are provided with suitable modifications to their program to meet their needs. Exceptional students at St. Francis Xavier are accommodated in special class settings, and are integrated into regular classes for some subjects.
All students take religious education instruction in their home room, regardless of their status. School staff strive to ensure that Catholic values permeate all aspects of the curriculum and are an integral part of their day-to-day interactions with students.
A school is much more than just its academic programs, and at St. Francis Xavier a wide variety of co-curricular programs augments the regular programs and provide many opportunities for pupil growth.
House league athletics, inter-school sports competition, and a number of clubs and enrichment activities provide outlets for youthful energy as well as broadening the learning process. At. St. Francis Xavier, we are concerned with the total development of the child, and often it is through these activities that students are able to develop to their full potential.

Director of Education Visits St. Francis Xavier
On Friday, November 4th, Director of Education, Bruce Rodrigues took time
out of his busy schedule to visit the staff and students of St. Francis
Xavier Catholic School. Mr. Rodrigues attended Grade 8 at the school when
his family first came to Canada. Mr. Rodrigues, along with the Principal,
Judy Onody, and the Superintendent, Doug Yack, toured a few of the
classrooms and had the opportunity to meet many of the staff. On behalf of
the community, “Thank you, Mr. Rodrigues, and welcome to the Toronto
Catholic District School Board!”
The Catholic School Advisory Council of St. Francis Xavier hosted its annual barbecue in June (see photos below).
