St. Helen Catholic School has served the area of Brockton Village in the Toronto Catholic District School Board for 143 years. It has been situated at 1196 College Street for the past 81 years. In 1994, a new building was erected in connection with the 1914 building which was refurbished. The architecture and design of our new school has won awards from the Ontario Architectural Conservancy and the Ontario Historical Society.
The school is dedicated to our patron, Saint Helen, the discoverer of the cross, and like her, seeks to serve the Lord through the stewardship with which He has charged us.
Within the presence of a Catholic environment of daily prayer and liturgical instruction, we strive for a safe and welcoming environment.
A code of behaviour stressing individual responsibility, respect and consideration for others is followed by our school. Parental input and support for this is vital. The safety of our students is a prime focus through daily education, a safe arrival program and presentations from safety officers and other relevant agencies.
On a cyclical basis, specific initiatives are targeted for intensive development. Science and technology, early literacy and peace education are our foci this year.
Programs are further modified for exceptional students as prescribed by IPRC or teacher planning. A rich array of co-curricular programs are offered to complement the school programs in religious, social, intellectual, physical and musical areas.

Catholic District School Board Celebrates Exemplary Practices
Each year, the Toronto Catholic District School Board
is proud to acknowledge innovative programs and special projects at
local schools with the TCDSB Exemplary Practice Award. The winners
of the ninth annual awards were honoured at a special ceremony and
reception in April. Among the winners is:
St. Helen Catholic School (Toronto): To Achieve Substantial Student Improvement in Literacy (Focus: Reading Comprehension)--At each division, data is used to highlight and identify the expectations in the curriculum that need to be addressed. The school uses data to track all student progress and to identify students requiring specific reading intervention. Teachers implement literacy strategies across the curriculum and apply these common strategies throughout each grade level.
“Each year we are impressed with the variety and quality of submissions that we receive for consideration for the Exemplary Practice Awards. It reminds us of the amazing things that can be accomplished when the many partners in Catholic education focus their energies on a common goal,” says Director of Education Kevin Kobus. “These winners have distinguished themselves by boldly daring to implement new approaches to learning, and who have succeeded in their endeavours. It is our hope that others will be inspired in their pursuit of new and innovative ideas that will continue to build upon the quality of education in our Catholic schools.”
