St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic School opened in September 1973 and is named after St. Ignatius, the founder of the Jesuits.
Born in 1491, the youngest of 11 children, Ignatius left his father's castle at age 15 to become a page in the Spanish court. Subsequently, he became a soldier and received his knighthood.
On being injured, he recuperated in Loyola where the only reading material was The Life of Christ. As he read, grace touched his heart and he committed to imitating his new hero. His conversion led him into persecution and great suffering. In 1534, he and several companions founded the Society of Jesus, the new warriors of Christ. This society went into the community to teach, preach, help others and spread the faith. Ignatius died on July 31, 1556. One of the great spiritual leaders of the church, Ignatius was canonized in 1622 after Rome studied 200 miracles through his intercessions.
With a quarter century-old tradition of growth, academic excellence and commitment, our school community strives to live up to the teachings and ideals of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic School offers a wide variety of programs including regular classes, junior kindergarten, grade 8, English as a second language, remedial special education, gifted special education centre (for north Scarborough) and multiple exceptionality. A diverse population is serviced with an attempt to meet each student's individual spiritual, academic, social and emotional needs.
Catholic environment
St. Ignatius of Loyola Catholic School provides a learning environment where models of Gospel values and Catholic doctrines, teaching and beliefs are integral aspects of daily life. Religious education and family life programs, sanctioned by the Canadian Conference of Bishops, are taught at each level and form a firm foundation for the faith development of students. Students are taught to live their faith by participating in liturgical and paraliturgical celebrations, food drives and ShareLife campaign as well as living each day in a Christian manner through prayer and action.
Safe and welcoming environment
We pride ourselves in providing a safe, inviting school. Students adhere to a code of conduct which assists in providing security for all, both inside the school and in the playground. Our safe arrival program, where parents call in advance to inform us of a child's absence, assists us in ensuring that all of our students are safe.
Curriculum initiatives
The staff at St. Ignatius of Loyola develops programs from junior kindergarten to grade 8 which are consistent with the Ministry of Education and the Toronto Catholic District School Board curriculum guidelines. Every effort is made to modify programs in order to accommodate individual student needs.
Co-curricular programs
A wide variety of programs are offered to enhance and support the work being accomplished in the classroom. Excursions at all levels are program-related and give students a wide variety of experiences and unique educational opportunities. Extra-curricular activities include soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, badminton and track and field.

TCDSB students rise to the challenge
-- the Robotics Challenge!
Elementary
students and teachers from the Toronto Catholic District School Board
attended the second “Go Robotics Challenge” recently at St. Ignatius of
Loyola Catholic School in east Toronto. Hosted by the TCDSB elementary
Gifted Withdrawal Program, this tournament was for junior and intermediate
students with an interest in robotics. Using the "Lego Mindstorms" kits,
students designed, built and programmed their robots to complete a number of
challenges. Fourteen teams of five students from grades 5 through 8
participated at this event. All the challenges reflected an environmental
theme and required students to program the robots to sort and recycle
"garbage", pick up "toxic waste" and safely dispose of it, clean up along a
riverbank, pollinate flowers and construct a wind turbine. These are just a
few of the problems the students had to work together to complete.
The intensity, creativity and enthusiasm the students demonstrated for
soving the various challenges amazed the spectators. The organizing team
was comprised of Kim Anthony, Karen Engelmann, Stephen Halliday, Helen Volk
(Teachers of the Gifted) and Sofie Sommer (Vice-Prinicpal at St. Margaret
Catholic Schoo). Planning has already begun for next year’s Go Robotics
Challenge.
