History & Tradition

St. Leo Catholic School has just celebrated its 75th Anniversary. St. Leo was the only Catholic school in the Mimico Separate School Board when it was founded in 1926. In the original 1926 wing, St. Leo consisted of eight classrooms and an auditorium. This auditorium was used for many Church and community events and was indeed the cultural and entertainment centre for Catholics in Mimico.

Today St. Leo Catholic School has classes from Junior Kindergarten through to grade 8. There are also three special programs: two classes for children with multiple exceptionalities and the K.I.N.D. Program (Kindergarten Intervention and Needs Development) for Junior and Senior Kindergarten students who need a special boost to start them on their school career.

The school is home to students from varying ethnic and cultural backgrounds who live in Mimico. This school is exceptional for its large number of second, third and even fourth generation St. Leo students. The most outstanding feature of the St. Leo community is the strong tradition of Catholic family values that is evident in our students.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Our students come to us with a variety of strengths and needs, but they all have one thing in common: they are members of a Catholic community. Our prayer life, our liturgical celebrations, the sacraments, and our faith and value system form the foundation of our program.

As outlined in our Parent Handbook which is distributed to all families at meet the teacher night in September, we have a code of behaviour policy at St. Leo which emphasizes mutual respect. conflict resolution and mediation, and self-discipline. Our safe arrival program encourages constant home-school communication when a student is absent or late.

Our instructional program is always adapting to meet the particular needs of our students. Students who experience difficulty with regular classroom work are discussed in our school-based support network and instruction is modified, adapted, or individualized as needed. If necessary, we can call on the support and advice of the joint team, which includes TCDSB staff such as our social worker, psychometrician, assessment and programming teacher, and other specialized personnel. Parents are always informed and invited to participate in this process. For many of our students, English is a second language, and we have two ESL teachers who work with small groups of students from grades 3 to 8 to help them make the adjustment to the English curriculum.

St. Leo School has always had a strong extra-curricular and co-curricular program. The following is a list of events, clubs and activities available to students:

  • concerts
  • choirs
  • spoken arts and public speaking
  • math, science and technology fair
  • W5H general knowledge competition
  • primary fitness club
  • skating at Mimico Arena
  • chess club
  • student council
  • school sports (volleyball, basketball, cross-country and track & field)

Toronto West Team Chess Championship
Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School was the host of the Toronto West Team Chess Championship for Elementary Schools.  Close to 200 students from Grades 1-8 filled the halls, theatre and library of the new state-of-the-art building to battle each other in the classic game of strategy and concentration.  Many students were awed not only by the idea of being in a high school, but also by the size of the tournament:  14 schools, divided into 38 divisional teams vying for the title of champion.  The results, after up to five hours of non-stop competition were: Intermediate Division-1st Place - St. Leo Catholic School.
