The new facilities built for students of St.
Luigi Catholic School were officially opened and blessed on June 3, 1979. St. Luigi, one
of the pioneer sharing schools, was opened in Perth Avenue Public School in 1973 and
portables were added as enrollment grew.
Our school is named for Father Luigi Monti, the founder of the religious order known as the Sons of the Immaculate Conception.
Father Luigi was born near Milan Italy, July 24, 1825. Throughout his entire life he dedicated himself to serving God. He alternated the task of educator with that of nurse when cholera broke out and he did not spare himself in helping the sick. Today the Sons of the Immaculate Conception continue the work of Father Luigi in hospitals, and educational apostolates as priests, doctors, nurses, teachers and educators. Father Luigi died October 1, 1900.
The fostering of a Catholic environment is extremely important. Formal and informal prayer is an integral part of our school life in classrooms, meetings and celebrations.
We strive to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment through the safe arrival program and the student code of behaviour.
Programs are modified to provide for the diversity of language, social and learning needs. These are addressed in the regular program as well as through our special education and English as a second language programs.
Co-curricular and extra-curricular activities include chess club, mini tennis, soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, track and field, baseball, choir, instrumental music, talent show, W5H and other joint parent/school activities.

St. Luigi Art Program
During the last week of January, grade 7 an 8 students at St. Luigi
Catholic School were involved in an art program that included special
guest, Mr. Moudu Ekhar who went to Mrs. Gingerich, Mrs. Rodrigues and
Ms. Corino’s classes to teach their class various types of art with a
focus on creating comics.
During his visit, Mr. Ekhar showed the students a video about a town
that was located in Nova Scotia called Africville. Africville is a place
where many people of African origin lived. After a few years, the
government said that Africville had to go. In between 1964 and 1967,
people were getting evicted and Africville was being destroyed as a
town. There were many protests going on for this piece of land.
After watching this video, students made comics about what happened in
Africville with some characters Mr. Ekhar asked them to draw. It was a
fun time and it gave the students an opportunity to write and draw what
they understood about Africville. This also gave them a chance to
sharpen their writing and drawing skills.
St. Luigi Teacher attends canonization of
new saints in St. Peter's basilica
On Sunday, October 11th, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI canonized five new
saints before tens of thousands of pilgrims and special guests in
St. Peter’s basilica in the Vatican. Portraits of all five saints
were hanging over the entry doors to St. Peter’s. Pilgrims from all
around the world had banners and scarves around their necks which
identified them as supporters of a particular saint. Among the
visitors was Anna Smieja, a teacher at St. Luigi Catholic School.
She attended the canonization of her relative, Archbishop Zygmunt
Szczesny Felinski.
Felinski (1822-1895) was born in Russian-occupied Poland, and lived in a time of political and religious oppression. After being ordained a priest in St. Petersburg, he became concerned for the children left behind by those sent to Siberia, and also the elderly and ill who had no one to care for them. He founded the Congregation of Franciscan Sisters of the Family of Mary who worked with orphans, the elderly and destitute.
In 1862, Felinski was appointed as archbishop of Warsaw, at the age of 40. Archbishop Felinski promoted religious and civil rights and established an orphanage and a school. Following an uprising, Felinski was exiled into the heart of Russia for 20 years, for his support of the Polish insurgents. After his exile, he was not allowed to return to his home, but spent the rest of his life as a parish priest in a small village. He was known for his humility and his saintliness, even during his life. The sisters he founded now continue his work in many countries around the world, including Brazil, Russia, Italy, Poland, and the Ukraine.
