History & Tradition

stluke.JPG (40043 bytes)St. Luke Catholic School was established in 1973 to accommodate the wave of new Catholic immigrants in the area. On the present site, a large portable unit opened its doors to approximately 200 students from junior kindergarten to grade 8. During the initial years the school served primarily the Italian and Portuguese communities. In 1977, a new building was completed with impressive facilities, a double gym, design and technology, and science rooms. Over the next few years, the school grew immensely and several portables were erected to serve an ever-increasing population of students, predominantly of Portuguese origin. Presently, due to the large enrolment, every available space is in use for classrooms. St. Luke continues to be proud of its past, its academic and athletic excellence, its Christian environment, school spirit and strong community ties.

The school is dedicated to the gospel writer St. Luke, who lived about 2000 years ago. He has been referred to as an artist, physician and scholar. Much of what we know about him is based on his writings. He wrote in detail about women, social outcasts and those who were less fortunate. Gentleness, forgiveness, and salvation are recurring themes in his works. What is most familiar are the lines which are so beautiful they have been turned into a prayer. “Blessed are you among women. Blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Whenever we say “The Hail Mary” we should remember this prayer was inspired by our patron St. Luke.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

St. Luke School is committed to providing every student with the best possible educational opportunities, within a Catholic environment. The basic belief that each and every individual is a valued creation of God with gifts to share and needs which allow us to receive, validates our mission of fostering self-esteem, respect for life and helping one another to reach our potential. The underpinnings to our school life are daily prayer, religious instruction, excellence, relationships and harmony with the self, others and the environment.

We strive to provide a safe and welcoming environment for staff, students, parents and the community at large. Our behaviour code, security procedures, and safe arrival program contribute to this goal. The St. Luke code of behaviour, with clear staff and student expectations and consequences has been provided to every family in our community.

Our child-centered programs and varied evaluation strategies ensure student needs, strengths and interests are being acknowledged and are met. Curriculum initiatives are in keeping with current educational innovations.   Outcomes based education rightly focuses on what students are expected to have developed at different stages of their schooling, while standards take into account the range of student performances that can be expected at stages of learning.

Curriculum and expectations are addressed and are modified to meet the needs of students at level, below level and above level through a variety of instructional, remediation and enrichment activities. The school-based support process and inter-disciplinary team assist in providing suggestions for appropriate placement and modification of programs. Programs are further modified for exceptional students as prescribed by the identification, placement and review committee or teacher determination.

Some of the special programs which cater to the uniqueness of our students and meet a variety of individual needs are: French as a second language, international languages (Portuguese), instrumental/vocal music, special education/learning disabilities and English as a second language.

A wide range of academic, social and athletic co-curricular activities enhance our school programs. Choirs, bands, chess clubs, W5H teams, science clubs, video clubs, sports and much more provide enriching opportunities for leadership, team and individual competition, development of co-operative skills, participation and excellence in a variety of areas.

We at St. Luke will continue to work to meet the diversified needs of all our students and to educate the whole child in an effort to equip our future citizens with the skills they will need to function as happy, well-rounded, successful and responsible individuals in an ever-changing, complex world.

St. Luke Students at the Olympic Torch Relay at Nathan Phillips Square

Thousands of onlookers and cheering fans were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Olympic Torch at Nathan Philips Square on Thursday, December 17th. Fifty students from the TDSB and fifty students from TCDSB were asked to play an exciting role in welcoming Vicky Sunohara, former Olympian on the woman's hockey team. Students from St. Luke School and Our Lady of Lourdes School were provided with official Olympic toques and scarves and also matching gloves and sweaters. They were given flags representing one hundred countries participating in the Olympics. Lined up on a red carpet across the ice surface these enthusiastic flag bearers waved their flags in excitement to the music of live bands onstage. Performances by local, national and international artists kept the audience entertained while waiting for the Olympic Torch to arrive. As Vicky Sunohara arrived with the torch she passed through the two long rows of our students who waved their flags to welcome the former Olympian to the stage where she lit the cauldron. Following this was the amazing fireworks display which was enjoyed by the public but missed by the students since they had their fill of the cold outdoors and were enjoying the warmth inside City Hall. Accompanying the students to this wonderful event was a number of dedicated teachers and parents. It certainly was a night these students will remember for a lifetime.

The Olympic Torch Relay will travel over 45,000 km across Canada over 106 days, visiting over 1000 communities and will be carried by 12,000 people. More than 200 athletes will represent the Canadian Olympic Team when the games officially open on February 12, 2010 in the city of Vancouver.
