Our school is named after the first Irishman who became a
legal saint, Mael Maedoc Ua Morgair. Born in 1095, in Northern Ireland, Malachy was raised
in a very religious and highly moral home where he learned obedience, self-discipline and
fair play.
At the age of 25, Malachy became a priest and was made Bishop of Connor at age 30. Here he brought faith back to the people through kindness and wholesome severity. Malachy was credited with many miracles and prophecies. On All Soul's Day in 1148, St. Malachy died in France in the arms of St. Bernard. St. Malachy's feast day is celebrated each year with readings, the St. Malachy Song, and with everyone wearing the school colours, green, white and orange.
The 10-acre site on which St. Malachy Catholic School is situated was formerly owned by Arthur and Emma Bennett and was farmland used for mixed farming and raising hogs.
The Metropolitan Separate School Board (now the Toronto Catholic District School Board) purchased the site on July 8 , 1954 and construction of the school began during the summer of 1969. St. Malachy opened in September 1969, in portables at St. Martin de Porres School. It had eight teachers and 225 students. The school moved to its permanent site in March, 1979. Mrs. Mary Michell was the first principal of the school. It was she who was instrumental in establishing an Irish flavour to the school.
At St. Malachy School we strive to maintain an environment which reflects our Catholic faith. Each day begins with a scripture reading on the public address system, which is read by various students. Each child in the school has the opportunity to read to the entire community from our book of faith at least once during the year. Prayers are said in each class at various times throughout the day. School, divisional and class liturgies, paraliturgies and other celebrations are held throughout the year. Modeling of our Christian values is encouraged at all times.
Providing a safe and welcoming learning environment is a priority in our school. At the beginning of each school year, the students are assembled in the gym to review collectively the safety rules and practices within our community, and are reminded of such frequently throughout the year. A safe arrival program is in place so that children who are not at school can be easily identified. The students are supervised throughout the day from 8:25 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. Family and other community members are most welcome at our school, however, all visitors are reminded that they must first report to the office upon entering the school. These and other safety measures, including our code of behaviour, are clearly outlined in the Parent Handbook which is distributed yearly.
Once the spiritual and physical needs of the students are met with a warm, safe Catholic environment, their academic needs can be addressed. At St. Malachy, we strive to provide academic programs which encourage students to achieve their highest potential. Through daily and long range plans, teachers outline courses of study and address curriculum outcomes. Programs are enriched through out-of-school excursions, partners in action--teachers working with our librarian, teacher in-services, conferences and computer usage.
Each child's progress and needs are carefully monitored so that programs may be modified when necessary. If the need arises for individual program modification, assistance may be provided to the classroom teacher by members of our school-based support team. Should additional assessment be necessary following this stage, a joint action team meeting is held to further discuss the child's needs. The parents, school-based support team members and out-of-school support members are in attendance at such a meeting. Parents are kept well informed of their children's progress through various forms of communication--phone calls, notes and conferences. By working together, parents and staff have been meeting the needs of our children.
In addition to addressing the various academic, emotional and spiritual needs of students at St. Malachy Catholic School, we provide opportunities for them to explore their talents and interests through various clubs, teams and events, including sport teams, choir, chess club, W5H, student council, talent show and concerts. Participation in such activities allows the students to further develop their social and interpersonal skills, while contributing to the overall positive and high spirited culture of the school.

Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard at
St. Malachy Catholic School
St. Malachy Catholic School nominated crossing guard Carl Edquist in
the “Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard” contest sponsored by Federal Express
Canada Ltd. And Safe Kids Canada. The school is proud to announce that Mr.
Edquist has been selected.
The crossing guard has been welcoming students and their families, and helping them cross safely at the intersection of Lawrence Avenue East and Bennett Road for many years.
All classes participated in the nomination process. The students created books, poems and raps celebrating Mr. Edquist and his involvement in the school community. There was even a life-sized mural of the crossing guard, photos of him in action and student stories about their interactions with their favourite crossing guard.
On Monday December 19th at 11a.m. the school held an assembly in the gymnasium at 80 Bennett Road to celebrate Canada’s Favourite Crossing Guard. Federal Express Canada, Safe Kids Canada, Crossing Guard Co-coordinator, Tom Bernaske, from 43 Division and officials from the Toronto Catholic District School Board were in attendance for the celebration.
St. Malachy Catholic School will also receive $1,000 for their successful nomination.

Journey of the Witness to Faith Cross at St. Malachy
The Toronto Catholic District School Board is ushering in the new school
year with a celebration to launch “The Year of Witness”, the third year of
the Board’s three-year pastoral plan focusing on Word, Worship and Witness.
For the year of Witness, the students at Neil McNeil Catholic Secondary
School have created a travelling cross, which will journey across the school
system throughout the year, with each school having an opportunity to spend
a day with the cross.
St. Malachy students welcomed the cross to their school on September 22.
