History & Tradition

St. Maria Goretti has served the Catholic Community in the Eglinton and Kennedy area for over 50 years. Our strong Catholic faith and traditions are firmly established within this Scarborough community.  Four years ago, the original elementary school was demolished and the doors of the new school were opened in 1999.  The new building boasts beautiful bright hallways, three floors of large classrooms, a large double gym with a stage and a unique meeting place called the Ark.

The school was named after the patron saint of children, Maria Goretti, who at the age of 12, met a terrible death in 1890.  Her life reminds the community of the importance of spiritual growth and of the precious value of childhood.

In every way possible we nurture our students through a spiritual, loving and caring Catholic partnership formed by the Church, the school and the family.  Our school  is an extension of the Catholic family for each child and we work very hard to create a trusting environment, which is rooted in Christian values and academic excellence.

We serve more than 1,000 culturally diverse children, well over half of whom speak a language other than English at home.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Our Catholic school contributes to the formation of our children in their faith life. In partnership with the home and parish, our students grown in knowledge of prayer, scripture and Catholic teaching. Highlights of the School Action Plan 2002-2003

Each school develops a local action plan in consultation with the local Catholic School Advisory Council. A Toronto Catholic District School Board plan provides the foundation for the local action plan. The school pan is revised as new data is available and analyzed.

  • To enhance the effectiveness of assessment, in order to improve instruction, student achievement, and to validate student learning.
  • To raise the overall level of junior/intermediate students' literacy skills by enhancing reading and writing proficiency.
  • To raise the overall level of kindergarten to grade 3 literacy skills to promote reading proficiency.
  • To provide in-service opportunities to staff through the Professional Learning Centre at St. Maria Goretti.

Voices that Challenge Leadership Conference
The Toronto Catholic District School Board and Student Trustee Diego Noronha welcomed student leaders from across the City of Toronto at year’s leadership conference, Voices that Challenge 2008. The conference celebrates and models proactive student leadership programs, informs and motivates students, and provides ideas and strategies that student leaders can take back to their local schools. With keynote speaker Stephen Lewis, the theme for this year’s conference was aptly entitled Today Towards Tomorrow: Responsible World Citizenship.

Stephen Lewis and Les Nemes with (L to R) Cecilia Bruni, Tanya Reilly Primaylon, and Loretta LeBlanc, teachers at St. Maria Goretti Catholic School
