History & Tradition

St. Mary of the Angels is one of the oldest Catholic schools in the Metropolitan Toronto area. It was founded as “St. Clement's School” prior to World War I, as part of St. Clement's Parish (which served the Davenport Community from 1915 to 1936). In 1954, (the year after the amalgamation of the Metropolitan Separate School Board), it was renamed “St. Mary of the Angels” to reflect the parish in which it currently resides. Until June, 1960, the Sisters of Loretto staffed the school.

Our patron saint was introduced to the community by the Franciscan Fathers, when they laid the corner stone of St. Mary of the Angels church in 1936. St. Mary of the Angels was highly venerated by the Italian-Canadian population which, at the time, made up the majority of the community.

Our current school population complements the multicultural character of Metropolitan Toronto. More than 25% of the children were born outside of Canada, representing 15 countries world-wide. For more than 80% of the children, English is spoken as a second language in the home.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

In keeping with our Mission to “educate students to their full potential”, our programs and approaches to learning must reflect each student's individual and diverse needs.

To ensure a Catholic environment:

  • Emphasis is placed on a common mission and purpose
  • Efforts are made to ensure a welcoming environment
  • The teaching of Catholic doctrine, traditions and beliefs is stressed through a Christ-centered curriculum throughout the school day
  • Staff and parents endeavour to demonstrate commitment to Catholicism and to serve as role models of Catholic values
  • The peace education and peer mediator programs provide opportunities for building self-esteem and peaceful resolution of conflicts
  • The program is enhanced through a variety of liturgies and paraliturgies throughout the year
  • Active involvement by our parish priests maintains a partnership between Church and school

To provide a safe and welcoming environment:

  • A safe arrival program has been instituted
  • Our code of behaviour stresses fairness and responsibility
  • Parents and members of our community are encouraged to be involved, as individuals and as members of the Catholic School Advisory Council
  • A friendly atmosphere is encouraged
  • Members of our community are actively involved in our school: parent volunteers and co-operative education students join student teachers and community workers in providing individual student assistance
  • A daily snack program provides our students with nutritious sources of energy

Curriculum initiatives reflect students' diverse needs:

  • Students use and have access to a range of technologies, with an emphasis on computer literacy and media literacy
  • Emphasis is placed on integrating language arts into all aspects of the curriculum
  • Special education and English as a second language programs address individual needs, while providing students the opportunity for integration into regular programs
  • The international language program acknowledges our students' heritage and culture
  • Support is provided through our guidance teacher, and team of social workers, psychologists, and speech and language personnel
  • Co-curricular activities (choir, chess club, computer club), school sports, as well as excursions and cultural performances round out our education program.
