History & Tradition

St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic School opened its doors to the community in September, 1984 with a beautiful new building, an enthusiastic staff and 268 students. The spirit of the school is founded on the devotion to St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish friar, imprisoned in Auschwitz Death Camp in the Second World War, who offered his life in place of another condemned to death. As such, St. Maximilian is recently admitted to the canon of the Church, and is a concrete example of Christian love amidst evil.

Pat McLaughlin was the founding principal and Maeve Jara, the school association president.  Reverend Matthew Robbertz, Pastor at Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, offered a solemn blessing on the school and its community.

The school crest was designed in 1984 by Sean Jara, Grade 8 pupil. The school song, dedicated to St. Maximilian Kolbe, was written by Tony De Cristofaro, teacher. Bolt, the school mascot, was adapted from the sports’ team name, the Kolbe Lightning.

The school celebrated its 10th anniversary during the 1994/95 school year with a celebration organized by staff and parents. Marina Kolbe, great grand-niece of St. Maximilian Kolbe, addressed the community during the anniversary celebration.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. (Lk 2:52)

The students at St. Maximilian Kolbe have a long and vibrant history of living out the commandment to love, through participation in a variety of charity initiatives. Among others, we support the Out of the Cold  program for the homeless, through the efforts of our parish. Terry Fox Run, Share Life Appeal and Toonies for Autism are some of the other ways this year that our students manifest their faith in the world.

At St. Maximilian Kolbe, we pride ourselves on a curriculum which is rich in the arts. Our staff have undergone an intensive training program, Learning Through the Arts, offered through the Royal Conservatory of Music. Because of this, our students are introduced to wonderful art knowledge, skills, appreciation, and final products, across the curriculum, particularly with links to Social Studies, Family Life and Religion.

Everyone at St. Max is also actively involved in our fine music program. Our school has a Primary Choir and a School Choir, and all students sing in one or the other. We also have the excellent Yamaha keyboarding program, wherein all students from grades one to four receive music theory and practice via keyboard, under the superb direction of Ms Di Pede, our vocal music teacher. Students in grades six to eight receive instrumental music classes twice a week, with our maestro Mr. Di Girolamo.

Both vocal and instrumental students participate in performances at the school level, and in Board and City-wide festivals. Our choirs sing for the residents of St. Paul L’Amoreaux Seniors Centre during Advent, an event which is a treat for both the seniors and the students. As well, weekly choir practice includes preparation for the songs we will use at mass.

St. Maximilian Kolbe does not only provide a rich arts curriculum. In keeping with our mandate to teach the whole person, we also are involved in a number of inter-school athletic activities, from badminton to volleyball. In addition, we have a strong tradition of involving all students in our House League program. This allows every student to develop game and sports skills in an environment which stresses active and co-operative involvement. In support of the recently mandated Daily Physical Activity, St. Max has created a Health Action Team involving staff and students. Our Team’s continued goal for this year is to improve the health and fitness level for the entire school. This involves goals in physical, social and emotional health for all of the children here.

As part of our DPA, the whole school meets every morning in the gym for real opening exercises. Led by student members of the HAT, we all, staff, students and any visitors, move in a variety of ways – to different music and exercise videos, or to a set of activities. Each division is also involved in special presentations by health officials, on topics touching nutrition, games and self-esteem.

Our students also have a history of high achievement in provincial standardized testing, significantly exceeding Board and provincial averages. Indeed, for the EQAO tests of May 2006, our school ranked highest in all of the Scarborough schools in our Board. This reflects their dedication to learning, as well as the consistent striving for excellence from our parents and staff.

While we have a small student population, we have a very full and rich learning and living environment, and are able to offer our students relatively smaller class sizes. Because of our numbers, each student is known to all staff, creating a safe and welcoming place for young people to grow. At St. Maximilian Kolbe, all students are invited to “Maximize the Mind” in a caring and Christian community. Along with our parents and parish, we prepare our students to experience life in all its fullness, and to become active citizens as adults. We exemplify the old adage:

Good things come in small packages.

Much of our activities incorporate physical activity into other aspects of the curriculum. Some examples are our Houseleague system, and the number of school competitive teams we are able to field in spite of the limited numbers of students at St. Max. Staff feel that the involvement in the sport, the joy movement and exertion give to the body, the camaraderie which builds on any team and the sense of well-being which comes from achieving personal athletic goals, make the investment in time and energy all worthwhile. Thanks so much to all our staff volunteers!

Activities Throughout the Year

Skating
All of the students from JK to grade 8 enjoy our twice-yearly skate. Besides being a wonderful way to be fit and to enjoy winter, it is also a marvellous opportunity for the intermediate leaders in the school to help the younger ones safely learn to skate. The program combines the St. Max focus on Active Living with the commandment to look after “the least of our brothers and sisters”.

Many of the student helpers were members of our HAT:

Mansfield Outdoor Education Centre, Orangeville
Every year our intermediates go on an overnight excursion either to an outdoor education site or to Ottawa. This past year the students had a wonderful time at Mansfield, participating in fun, fellowship, spiritual growth and outdoor education.
