History & Tradition

Our school is named for St. Michael who was the leader of the celestial armies and the guardian of the souls of men. St. Michael's special day is September 29th. It is called the feast of St. Michael and all Angels in honour of all the angels who helped St. Michael in the battle against evil.

St. Michael Catholic School is a model school built in conjunction with the public school board in an apartment building that is part of the St. Lawrence Development. This concept of a mixed economic community was brought to life following the mayoralty of David Crombie, elected in 1970, who was determined to bring housing back into downtown Toronto.

The school aims to serve the local community. The first 15 children were admitted in 1979 and were bussed daily to another neighbouring Catholic school. The school building we now occupy was officially opened on June 9, 1982 with 103 children.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

As we know that all our students are treasured gifts from God, we would limit each child's potential for learning if we did not have the highest expectations of our students and acknowledge and provide for all possible learning styles.

We aim to work together to ensure that our school provides every individual with a safe, positive, welcoming learning environment. Students in grades 4-7 see a live presentation by the Toronto Police Department of “Choices”, stressing community responsibility. While grades 1-8 see the video presentation “Never Be A Victim”, concerning personal safety.

We believe that the development of good interpersonal relationships and a positive classroom atmosphere conducive to learning will promote good behaviour. A workshop on peace education is offered every Monday after school. The students learn effective communication and conflict resolution.  The subject plans have been developed collaboratively by staff, students and the community. The key to the success of the curriculum is the emphasis on outcomes, that provide a basis for evaluating student achievement and program effectiveness.

In the primary division the children include in their indicators of success the development and use of the language of science and technology. In the junior division more manipulatives have been purchased to give the children the opportunity to create working models. In the intermediate division a new math program focuses on co-operative learning, critical thinking and integrated problem solving. Enrichment for the program is planned by the teachers in each division. House league and intermural volleyball games are played in the junior and intermediate divisions.

The school choir is active and sings at school masses and concerts, as well as community events. Excursions from school include visits to the Royal Ontario Museum, Casa Loma, the Young Peoples' Theatre and Pioneer Camp.
