St. Philip Neri Catholic School opened in 1942 on 20 Wardlaw Avenue, with additions in 1952 and 1954. In response to population growth, the present building was opened in 1960 with an addition in 1966. The older building is affectionately named the Annex. Students from St. Philip Neri and other schools were taught there until it was closed a few years ago. With area development, the street name was changed to Beverly Hills Drive. The current school houses 20 classrooms, a gymnasium and a library.
St. Philip Neri's two favourite books were the New Testament and a book of jokes and riddles. He is especially remembered for his great sense of humour, his cheerfulness, and his ability to bring out the best in people. Born in Florence, Italy, on July 21, 1515, he was a business man, teacher and scholar. Philip was humble and simple. People responded to his appealing personality. His spiritual advice was welcomed by all including Ignatius Loyola, Francis de Sales and Camillus de Lellis. Philip teaches us that being holy does not mean being sad. After a mystical experience in the catacombs, he spent 13 years ministering to the poor in Rome. Many young men joined him. He formed these men into a community called the Congregation of Priests of the Oratory. He died on May 26, 1595 and was canonized in 1622. St. Philip Neri, pray that we have joyful hearts.
At St. Philip Neri School, there is a strong commitment to literacy and numeracy which provides the positive skills for future learning. The diversified needs of our students are defined by culture, economics, multicultural, social and emotional needs.
