History & Tradition

stroseoflima.JPG (79600 bytes)St. Rose of Lima Catholic School first opened its doors in 1957 with an initial enrollment of 206 pupils. The first staff consisted of seven teachers including the principal while the first graduation class was composed of 14 students.

The population of St. Rose of Lima School grew over the years resulting in two additions being added to the original building.

St. Rose of Lima Church is conveniently located next door to the school. This has allowed students to readily attend morning mass on special occasions before classes as well as affording all students the opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist regularly in the church with their class.

At the beginning of each school year it has become tradition to honor St. Rose of Lima through a liturgy and/or paraliturgy. This is followed by a picnic at a local park. On this day students are encouraged to look to St. Rose as a source of inspiration and emulate her selflessness.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Catholic education: Learning in a Christ-centered environment

We endeavour to provide the best possible education to our students/your children in order to develop their potential. Development of good Christian attitudes and values will nurture a respect for others. They shall be instilled with a sense of self-worth and dignity which must be established before any meaningful learning can be initiated.

Literacy

With the assistance and encouragement of a school literacy representative, students are urged to write stories, poems, etc. These is often displayed in the school. A number of students have taken part in the Royal Canadian Legion's literacy competition. Many of the primary students are paired with older students (reading buddies) and exposed to a variety of reading materials.

Mathematics/science/technology

Hands-on manipulatives, apparatus and equipment allows students to develop skills, concepts and theories in these areas.

Parish priest visits

Our parish priest visits our school weekly, assists in preparing students for the sacraments, hears confessions and celebrates school masses on a regular basis.

Code of behaviour

Our school has developed a code of behaviour with the help of the school community.

Safe arrival program

This program assists in ensuring the safety of students. If a child is absent from school, we at school will phone home if parents have not already informed us of their child's absence. In order to facilitate this program we encourage parents to call the school if their child is going to be absent. If your child has your permission to leave the school during the school day, you, the parent, must inform the school in writing.

Co-curricular activities

A number of activities are available to students beyond the regular school programs. Overnight trips are occasionally offered to students in the intermediate division, providing outdoor education and opportunities for these students to develop responsibility and appropriate social skills.

Students are involved in the arts festival, a primary division musical and a concert.

Further activities include baseball, volleyball, basketball, house leagues, cross-country, track and field, chess, card club and W5H.
