History & Tradition

The school is named in honour of St. Sebastian, martyr-patron of athletes, soldiers, police and physicians. Sebastian was martyred for his belief in Jesus during the reign of Emperor Diocletion (Circa 288).

St. Sebastian Catholic School endeavours to create a Catholic learning community in which students will be able to develop their spiritual, intellectual, physical and social potential.

Everyone is to respect the person and rights of all members of the school and community without discrimination because of race, colour, ethnic origin or creed.

A recent school review report indicates that in excess of 90% of the parents and teachers surveyed found that:

  • The children are encouraged to make good judgments and value-oriented decisions
  • All members of the school community visibly and positively support the promotion of a Catholic faith community
  • Students and staff have a good working relationship with each other

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Daily prayers, liturgies, masses, mission projects, Advent, Christmas, Lenten and Easter activities are some of the public manifestations of our Catholicity.

The visible externals such as religious murals, papal flag, crucifixes, icons and prayer centres indicate to students, parents, staff and visitors our Catholicity.

Ongoing activities involving building bridges, peace education and peer mediation enhance the Catholic dimension.

Safe arrival procedures are in place and a code of behaviour for all students has been approved by parents and staff.

New and innovative programs related to technology are envisioned. Staff has been in-serviced in a new school wide mathematics program. Computer activity is being increased as additional funds are expended, and staff take both formal and informal upgrading programs.

Staff have developed social studies and science school plans for all grades and grade combinations from level 3 to level 8.

Program outcomes are designed to meet the learning needs of the students collectively and individually. Techniques such as employing peer tutoring, cooperative learning, small group instruction, cross divisional tutoring and team teaching allow for beneficial program modifications.

The specialized talents and resources of the teacher librarian, English as a second language and special education staff are employed to assist all staff, students and parents.

Activities such as video club, chess club, instrumental music, computer club and drama club, provide opportunities for enrichment and learning in areas of personal interest.

Many of the diversified needs of our students are met by agents and agencies representing Catholic Children's Aid Society, Toronto Board of Health, Earlscourt, Toronto Art Therapy Institute and Student Services Personnel.

St. Sebastian School celebrating its Faith and Character
During the month of February, students in the grade 4/5 class at St. Sebastian Catholic School designed posters demonstrating the virtue of Love.  Under the direction of their teacher, Pavane Chow, students worked very hard on their creations and then displayed them throughout the school to promote Love.  Students Clarissa Maio, Monica Avila, Camila Costa-Gizli, Andreia Correia and Diana Medeiros answered the question:  “How would Jesus want me to treat others?”

“I think Jesus would want me to treat others with respect.  Everyone is unique.  Everyone should be respected.  No one should be treated differently because they dress differently, or talk differently.  Another way to respect someone is to forgive others.  Even if you don’t want to forgive someone for doing something bad to you, the right thing to do is forgive that person.  If your friend doesn’t want to include someone you should just include them because that’s what Jesus would do.  Jesus wants us to treat other people the way you want to be treated.  That’s the golden rule!  Follow It!”
