History & Tradition

St. Wilfrid Catholic School was founded in 1966 and named after St. Wilfrid who was born in England in 634 AD. St. Wilfrid, our patron saint, was born of a noble family and traveled to Rome at an early age to perfect his knowledge of Roman culture. He later lived in Lyons, France, for three years where he completed his studies. On his return to England he was appointed Bishop of York.

St. Wilfrid's school celebrated its silver jubilee on April 28, 1991. Our school is widely known for the dedication of its teaching staff and parent community and its excellence throughout the years. The school motto portrays two hands clasped in shared friendship between adult and child, and its commitment to integrity, perseverance and excellence.

How We Meet the Diverse Needs of Our Students

Our school is committed to the development of the individual potential of all our students, and above all ensuring that they are formed in the Catholic faith and apply Christian values to life's opportunities, challenges and choices. In this regard, we strive to emphasize and provide a safe and welcoming environment where children are ensured good learning opportunities. Students and parents are aware of an agreed code of conduct to ensure this.

As for learning, curriculum is reviewed, developed and implemented within the framework of a Catholic educational philosophy. It is designed for all students, it is focused on learning outcomes, it is inclusive and oriented to the optimum development of our student body.

At St. Wilfrid's we cater to the needs of students needing English as a second language (ESL) , students needing remedial help, special education, students who are gifted, and students with a range of other abilities (music, drama and art). The school is structured so that meaningful integration of the curriculum occurs and our basic objective is excellence and equity for all. Further, provincial standards are used to assess and report on student progress while collaboration among teachers, parents and students, and the local community occurs on a regular basis.

The school provides house leagues in volleyball, floor hockey, flag football, baseball and extra-curricular volleyball, basketball, tennis, baseball, track and field, soccer and cross-country.

Toronto Catholic District School Board Celebrates Exemplary Practices
Each year, the Toronto Catholic District School Board is proud to acknowledge innovative programs and special projects at local schools with the TCDSB Exemplary Practice Award. The winners of the ninth annual awards were honoured at a special ceremony and reception in April. Among the winners is:

St. Wilfrid Catholic School (North York): Students to Develop Comprehension of Academic Content through Instructions of Vocabulary from Different Subject Areas--Specific classroom strategies included cooperative groups based on learning styles and a variety of accommodations for students with special needs.

“Each year we are impressed with the variety and quality of submissions that we receive for consideration for the Exemplary Practice Awards. It reminds us of the amazing things that can be accomplished when the many partners in Catholic education focus their energies on a common goal,” says Director of Education Kevin Kobus. “These winners have distinguished themselves by boldly daring to implement new approaches to learning, and who have succeeded in their endeavours. It is our hope that others will be inspired in their pursuit of new and innovative ideas that will continue to build upon the quality of education in our Catholic schools.”
