& Learning
Centre
Vision
The St. Barnabas Healthy Active Living and Learning Centre is dedicated to
providing teachers with excellent professional development opportunities in
Health and Physical Education curriculum delivery and becoming model schools
for healthy, active living and learning.
Mission
To enhance the knowledge and confidence of teachers in the area of program
delivery of Healthy and Physical Education.
To be a “model” Healthy Action Team school working collaboratively
with all “stakeholders” to promote healthy active living and learning.
To investigate the connections between improved programs in Health and Physical
Education and student performance in school.
Goals
To assist all teachers in delivering quality Health and Physical Education
programs through the use of the OPHEA curriculum documents.
To prepare schools in the TCDSB for the Ministry mandated “20 minutes
of daily vigorous activity”, slated to take effect in September 2005.
To encourage the development of Health Action Teams in as many TDCSB schools
as possible and assist schools with the development and implementation of
action plans in this area.
HOW TO REGISTER FOR AN “ON-SITE”
REGIONAL IN-SERVICE
AT ST. BARNABAS
Peruse the in-services that are offered for this term.
If you see a topic that peaks your interest, speak to your principal about attending the regional in-service of your choice. Your principal will be able to help you arrange coverage for your class.
Send me an email (gordon.maclean@tcdsb.org)indicating the regional in-service and date that you would like to attend . Please write this information in the subject line of the email. (EMAIL LINK at bottom of page)
Registration will be based on the “date and time” your email is sent—“first sent, first registered”.
A confirmation will be sent to you and your principal indicating whether or not you are registered for your chosen in-service.

HPE LESSON DEMONSTRATION
AT ST. BARNABAS
The East Region teachers will also have the opportunity to come to St. Barnabas and see a “demonstration lesson” in Health and Physical Education. If you or a small group of teachers from your school would like to come to the centre to see to a demonstration lesson, then send me an email (Gordon.maclean@tcdsb.org) with the following information:
Your grade
The area of need/interest in the HPE curriculum
A few morning dates that would be convenient for you or your group to come
to the centre.
I have provided a list of the major sections in the OPHEA Binders. Please consult your grade’s curriculum binder in order to help you narrow your area of need/interest before sending me your email.

Creative Movement Through Dance
Designed to assist teachers in applying movement skills using music as well
as the OPHEA document..

Creative Arts Dance Workshop–
Entails modern, hip-hop and cultural dance. There will also be a live drummer.
Various teaching techniques will be explored.
Division: J/I

1 to 3 pm REGISTER ON:Feb. 4th
Kinetica/Gaming– Includes a presentation on asthma and obesity and the
modern day student...Also includes a cross-curricular/daily vigorous activity
component ; activities for the regular classroom as well as the gym.

March 22

“OFF-SITE” PD Topics—Term 2
HPE 101
Designed to introduce and help
teachers work with the OPHEA curriculum document from planning lessons/units
to assessment/evaluation while addressing “gymnasium management.”
Health and Physical Education—
The Literacy and Numeracy Connection
Designed to help teachers make
the connections between many curricular areas and the HPE program. It will
focus on making the classroom “active” as well as making the
gymnasium a literate/number filled space.
Intramural Activities—Primary to Intermediate
Designed to assist schools in the organization and delivery of intramural activities.
“OFF-SITE” PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT
I will also be available in the morning to come to your school and help you (or a small group of teachers) with your (their) Health and Physical Education programs. All you have to do is to speak to your principal indicating that you would like me to come in to your school for a PD session and then send me an email with the following information:

A few afternoon dates that would be convenient for you to meet with me at
your school.
