The music departments of St. Patrick and Marshall McLuhan combined talent and fun for an outstanding three day trip to Cleveland, Ohio – the home of rock and roll.  The first stop was the birthplace of  Motown – the home and recording studio of music genius Barry Gordy in Detroit, Michigan, a.k.a. Hitsville U.S.A.  Students were given the unique opportunity to sing and practice the moves of such music legends as the Temptations and the Supremes while touring the historic Motown museum.

While on tour, students were treated to live jazz music during dinner at the famous Fat Fish Blue restaurant and enjoyed a live performance by the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra at the beautiful Severance Hall.  With the opportunity for lunch at the famous Hard Rock Café and a guided tour of the city of Cleveland students quickly began to appreciate the how musical Cleveland is!

Two highlights of the trip included a stimulating clinic with music professor Gary Ciepluch at Case Western University and, of course, a memorable performance on stage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  While at the Hall of Fame, students had time to explore the amazing artefacts on display and learn more about the history of rock and roll and their favourite performers.  The tour wrapped up with a visit to the Cleveland Museum of Art to stroll through the special exhibition of work by impressionist artist Claude Monet.

Spirits were still high on the long ride home and plans were already being made for next year’s trip…. can anyone say Elvis?

Special thanks to Impact tours, our tour guide Marcel, bus driver Phyllis, and Marshall McLuhan music teachers Mr. Lewis and Mr. Donovan for their outstanding efforts in preparing the students for their performance and helping to ensure the trip was a great success!!
