STUDYING RELIGION HELPS US TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS IMPORTANT IN OUR LIVES AND AS A CAREER. OPPORTUNITIES ARE PROVIDED TO REFLECT ON ONE'S VALUES AND BELIEFS, SOME RELATED CAREERS ARE: TEACHER, THEOLOGIAN, PHILOSOPHER, ETHICIST AND RELIGIOUS VOCATION.

Religion is a compulsory course for every student at St. Patrick Catholic Secondary School. For graduation, students must have one course for each year they are at the school.

BE WITH ME
GRADE 9 - OPEN
1.0 CREDIT
This course invites students to a deeper understanding of both the job and the demands of following in the way of Christ and living out the call to discipleship as it is described in the Scriptures. Using the Beatitudes as a touchstone, students examine the attitudes and actions that characterize the Christian life. In the Family Life Education strand, students explore a variety of topics related to the themes of personhood, interpersonal relationships and sexuality. By raising important questions about their faith, this course leads students to a deeper understanding of their relationship with God and neighbour. Students are called to be caring family members and responsible citizens who are capable of exercising prudent judgment based on an informed conscience. Then, working out of an informed conscience, students will move toward responsible action based on the principles expressed in the Beatitudes.

CHRIST AND CULTURE
GRADE 10 - OPEN

This course examines the relationship between the person and message of Christ and the dominant attitudes of contemporary culture. Beginning with the Gospel narratives as a foundation, students acquire a deeper and more systematic knowledge of Christ, his message and his Church. Connections between the living Church and contemporary culture are explored in terms of what it means to be a responsible adolescent developing within a community of disciples in the context of a secular, pluralistic world. In the Family Life Education strand, students explore a variety of topics related to the themes of personhood, interpersonal relationships and sexuality.

WORLD RELIGIONS

This course enables students to discover what others believe and how they live, and to appreciate their own unique heritage. Students will learn about the teachings and traditions of a variety of religions, the connections between religion and the development of civilizations, the place and function O.of religion in human experience, and the influence of a broad range of religions on contemporary society. This course also introduces students to skills used in researching and investigating world religions.

This course introduces students to the range and diversity of world religions, and examines how systems of belief affect individual lives and social relationships. Students will learn about a variety of religious beliefs, teachings, traditions, and practices. The course also helps students to develop skills used in researching and investigating topics related to world reigions.

PHILOSOPHY: QUESTIONS AND THEORY

A reading and seminar course designed to introduce students to the art of philosophical inquiry. Through exposure to a wide selection of texts within the tradition of "Western Philosophy", students will be introduced to a number of the traditional philosophical problems such as: What is reality? What is truth? What can we know? Does God exist? Is man free? How should we live? The course will address the contemporary philosophical crisis of intellectual and moral relativism.

This course assists students in their development of the skills and knowledge necessary to live lives of full maturity. Within the Catholic faith tradition, it is believed that this growth towards human maturity is best served when students are able to define themselves authentically in relation to their God, to other people and to their world. In the Family Life Education strand, students explore a variety of topics related to the themes of personhood, interpersonal relationships and sexuality.
Students will demonstrate a knowledge of the prophetic tradition in scripture, become familiar with the social teachings of the Catholic Church, explore contemporary notions of spirituality and prayer, and recognize the importance, power and potential of the human person in relation to morality and personal choices concerning future life paths.
