RESOURCE DEPARTMENT SUPPORT COURSES

GLE/1O1/2O1/3O1/4O1
1.0 CREDIT EACH
This course will focus on the development of encoding and decoding skills for the exceptional student. It is intended that this course will develop the student's reading and comprehensive levels utilizing the Autoskills Reading Program and other teaching strategies.

MAT 14A & 14B
O.5 CREDIT EACH
These two courses must be taken consecutively, one each semester. This course provides an opportunity for students to obtain sufficient skill development. The students will explore organize, interpret and use mathematical models to solve problems. This course also enables the student to consolidate numeric and algebraic skills in problem solving and analytical geometry.

MAT 23A & 23B
O.5 CREDIT EACH
These two courses must be taken consecutively, one each semester. These courses enable students to consolidate their understanding of key mathematical concepts. Students will solve problems using a variety of methods of calculation; use patterning strategies to solve problems. They will collect and analyze date for linear relationships and geometric relationships. This course will prepare students for the Grade 11 Mathematics course MEL 3E1 (Mathematics for Everyday Life).

These courses consist of a classroom component and service component. Class time will include personal consultation with supervisors, journals and training sessions. The service component will consist of working with students who may require academic tutoring. PREREQUISITE : ACADEMIC COMPETENCE, TEACHER RECOMMENDATION

ADAPTIVE COURSES FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: (DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY-DD OR MULTIPLE HANDICAP-MH)
All adaptive special education courses are designed for students who have been formally identified as exceptional, specifically with a Developmental Delay or Multiple Handicap. Their intent is to provide, on an individualized basis, for the specific needs of the student, while at the same time giving them an opportunity to develop their skills in the particular subject being offered.

ADAPTIVE ENGLISH

This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Handicap. Its intent is to provide for the language needs of students, stressing language proficiency, organizational skills, and study techniques which will enhance performance in other academic subjects. The use of language is developed as a means by which students understand personal and societal goals by developing such qualities as initiative, responsibility, decisiveness, self-discipline, perceptiveness, and integrity.

ADAPTIVE DRAMA

This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Handicap. Its intent is to provide multi-sensory experiences with the elements of music and movement, improvisation and role play to enhance social initiation and self-esteem. It offers the opportunity for integration with other drama classes when possible.

ADAPTIVE VISUAL ARTS

This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Exceptionalities. Its intent is to provide multi-sensory experiences with the elements of colour, texture, shape, design and composition. Through this curriculum, gross and fine motor skills are enhanced with a general appreciation for the varied art media.

GENERAL LIFE SKILLS

This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Handicap. Students will complete modules that focus on daily living skills, personal social skills and occupational skills. Reading and writing skills will focus on a pragmatic curriculum to support integration into the community. This course will also include choice making and healthy living.

ADAPTIVE COMPUTER STUDIES

This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Exceptionalities. Adaptive computer studies provides hands-on opportunities to interact with computers, with real life applications being the priority.

ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
NO CREDIT
This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Exceptionalities. In this physical and health education course, emphasis is placed on issues of physical fitness through aquatic activities as well as health education.

PPL 1OQ/2OQ/3OQ/4OQ
ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
0.5 CREDIT
This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Exceptionalities. In this physical and health education course, emphasis is placed on issues of physical fitness through various sports activities. Senior students mentor as peer tutors to prepare for student participation in the Special Olympics to be held in the spring.

ADAPTIVE HOSPITALITY
NO CREDIT
This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Exceptionalities. Its intent is to provide for the life skill needs of students by stressing organization and time management, hygiene and aesthetics, health and safety and the development of various other skills which would contribute to the overall well-being of these students. Emphasis is placed on hospitality activities that include nutrition, meal planning and cooking.

ADAPTIVE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

This course is designed specifically for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Development Delay or Multiple Exceptionalities. Its intents is to develop a personal life attitude based on a Christian vision of the human individual. Students are encouraged to participate in Christ centered principles as they relate to their daily lives.

MONEY MANAGEMENT AND PERSONAL BANKING

This course is specifically designed for the student with special needs formally identified as having a Developmental Delay or Multiple Exceptionalities. This course will develop the awareness and use of money in the community for practical purposes.

This course is designed for the special needs student who is formally identified with a Developmental Delay or Multiple Exceptionalities. The development of work-related skills, life and self-management skills and community involvement are the primary focus for this work experience program.

EXPLORING THE WORLD OF WORK
NO CREDIT
This course is designed for formally identified special needs student. Students will learn job preparation skills: job searching, interviewing; and will explore a career of interest through the work experience. Learning skills will be developed to ensure that students become independent lifelong learners.

CREDIT
This course is designed for at risk students . The development of work related skills, life and self management skills and community involvement are the primary focus for this work experience program. This course will parallel the Ontario Skills Passport Program.
