CAREER INFORMATION :
2003 estimates that in Ontario
alone there will be openings for 56,000 new technology
workers over the next five years. Eight-eight
percent shortage of experienced workers.
Good jobs and good wages
are available to people with the right training
and education. Apprenticeship is a method of
training in which employers train workers to
become skilled tradespeople through on-the-job
training and classroom instruction.
St. Patrick
is proud to offer technological courses in Construction
technology and Hospitality, which may lead to
apprenticeship training through OYAP:
The Ontario
Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) offers Ontario
secondary school students the opportunity to
train as registered apprentices while enrolled
in school. It allows a student to complete his
or her Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)
and to gain apprenticeship training towards a Certificate
of Qualification with journeyperson status in a
skilled trade.
*Due to the strong growth in construction,
associations and unions are concerned that there
is a looming shortage of skilled construction
workers in the GTA.
* A broad range of employment
opportunities exists within tourism and hospitality.
The largest number of jobs is found in the food
and beverage sector. Toronto now has more than
5,000 restaurants to provide food and beverage
needs of visitors. According to Tourism Toronto,
the travel and tourism industry accounts for 128,000
jobs in the GTA and this number is growing.
