Biography

Sabrina Renna, Grade 11 student at Loretto Abbey Catholic Secondary School, has been selected as Student Trustee for the Toronto Catholic District School Board for the 2011-2012 school year.  Ms. Renna excels academically and her extra-curricular activities have prepared her for the deliberations of a school board meeting.  She has focused much of her extra-curricular activities on debating and discussing social-justice and economic issues through model United Nations symposiums and debating tournaments. For the past two years, she has been a Confirmation Facilitator at her local Parish, St. Wilfrid Catholic Church.

She has a genuine passion for the preservation and development of publicly-funded Catholic education.  Her faith guided her decision to attend a Catholic secondary school.  She was strongly influenced by the TCDSB goal to cultivate the mind “and spirit” which she says was the “defining moment” in making her decision.

As Student Trustee of over 90,000 Toronto Catholic students, she wants to continue to improve on the work set in place by her predecessor, Ms. Natalie Rizzo.  “I am dedicated to igniting a ‘fire’ in my fellow students to inspire them to work for change both locally and globally,” says Ms. Renna.  She believes that this kind of dramatic change can happen through school-based initiatives and through projects that address sustainability for the planet and, in particular, for Catholic education

History of the Student Trustee

The Education Quality Improvement Act, passed by the Canadian province of Ontario in 1997, mandated the creation of non-voting student representatives in publicly funded school boards across the province. Each year one secondary school student is elected to serve the Board as a student trustee.
