A Mission of Hope for Haiti

Lenten Project

Missionaries of the Poor

In June of 2015, The Missionaries of the Poor, in co-operation with TCDSB, put on a spectacular production of Fr. Richard Ho Lung’s Reggae musical, The Messiah, at Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts.  The two goals of this production were:  to spread the good news of the gospel, and to provide food, shelter and clothing to those who do not have the means to provide for themselves.

Recently, the people in Haiti have suffered yet again another devastating blow due to Hurricane Matthew. This year, in co-operation with the Missionaries of the Poor, we are inviting our schools to participate in a special Lenten Drive, A Mission of Hope for Haiti.

Our goal is to fill a 40-foot-long container with food, toiletries and school items that we may take for granted—e.g. food items, like rice and beans, toiletries, like toothpaste and toothbrushes, or school items, like pencils and pens.  These items would be picked up from your school by volunteers from the Missionaries of the Poor, and through Canadian Food for Children, these items will be shipped to the Missionaries of the Poor to Haiti.

At the Catholic Education Centre, a bin will be available to collect donations throughout Lent:
Food: Rice, dried beans, dried peas, dried lentils, canned tuna fish, canned salmon, sardines, canned meat, canned vegetables, canned fruit, dried fruit (e.g. raisins, dates, prunes) assorted snacks.
Toiletries: soap, detergent, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, baby lotion, shaving cream, wipes, children and adult diapers, feminine care products.
School supplies: pencils, pens, notebooks, paper, school bags

The kick off for A Mission of Hope for Haiti took place at the African Heritage Mass and Cultural Expose on Friday, February 10, 2017.  Fr. Brian Kerr, M.O.P along with other M.O.P. missionaries from Jamaica provided information about the Lenten project, and in addition, they will be in Toronto during the Lenten season to offer the following:
·         school Masses
·         class visits/presentations/assemblies
·         work with leadership students

The Missionaries of the Poor is a Catholic Pontifical Order of Brothers and Sisters who devote themselves entirely to serving the poorest of the poor all over the world. We invite you to continue the spirit of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, as Pope Francis invites us all to be missionaries and to help the poor in any way we can. For as Jesus teaches us in Matthew 25:40,
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Please share this information with your staff and student leadership groups.
