Volunteers

Recruitment

Most volunteers are referred to the Continuing Education Volunteer Program by the Volunteer Centres of Greater Toronto Area. Each person is briefly interviewed by the Volunteer Centre and then directed to the Volunteer Co-ordinator of the Continuing Education Department. In some cases, a volunteer may be referred to an Adult Education program by a Co-sponsoring agency or come directly from the local community. Every volunteer is directed to the Volunteer Co-ordinator to be registered in the volunteer program and interviewed.

Placement

The volunteer must schedule an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator. During the interview, the volunteer is required to fill out an Adult Education Volunteer Application form and submit an updated resume. The Volunteer Coordinator determines the suitability of an individual in terms of motivation, needs and goals, communication and interpersonal skills, previous related experience, training and qualifications. Referral to a program occurs only on the request of instructional staff and consideration of an applicant’s suitability, proximity to instructional site and availability. Once placed, a volunteer is required to help in a program for a minimum of 2 hours, once a week, over a three-month period. A Certificate of Appreciation is issued to volunteers who complete fifty or more hours of volunteer service.

* The Volunteer Program runs from September to June.

In-Service Workshops

Volunteers are invited to attend Monthly In-Service Workshops that focus on topics relevant to assisting in the Adult Education Program.
