On This Rock Unveiling

Members of the community joined staff and students from Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts on June 5th for the opening and reveal of the ‘On This Rock’ Art Installation.  The installation is part of National Indigenous Month and TCDSB Indigenous Education Week celebrations.
‘On This Rock’ is a special project that represents student voices and students’ response to Indigenous education. The concept was developed by Aurora Pagano-Falcioni and Sandra Mustacato, Art Teachers from Cardinal Carter, and aims to create bridges between TCDSB and First Nations students across Canada. The installation signifies relationships and hope, and was recently featured on City News (click here to watch the feature). The free-standing house sculpture, covered in a mosaic of stones which are collected from all regions of Canada, serves as a symbol of solidarity for all Indigenous people and for all immigrants who have worked to build Canada and who have made their home, 'On This Rock'.
Participants, including the Honourable David Zimmer, MPP and Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation; representatives from the Metis community, and Elders, including Dr. Bob Phillips who runs the TCDSB Kairos Blanket Exercises witnessed the artistic talents of students through the many examples of Indigenous art housed throughout the atrium. The artwork will be on display for the duration of TCDSB Indigenous Education Week.
Following the reveal of the installation, guests were invited to add a stone from their own home to add to the installation. Light refreshments from Nish Dish were also served.
