New vaccines added to the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA)

Effective July 1, 2014, three more vaccines have been added to the ISPA to protect students from vaccine-preventable diseases.  The vaccines required for school attendance are:
  • measles, mumps, rubella
  • diphtheria, tetanus, polio
  • meningococcal*
  • pertussis*(whooping cough)
  • varicella*(chickenpox) – for children born on or after January 2010, entering JK

*New vaccines required
All high school students who did not receive the voluntary meningococcal vaccine (Menactra®) in grade 7 will need a catch up dose.  Menactra® vaccine, which protects against four strains of meningococcal infection, is available through Toronto Public Health community clinics.  Students may book appointments to receive this vaccine at Our staff will be reaching out to your students to ensure they received the vaccine; however, we will not be suspending students this year.
Please refer parents or students to our Immunization Information Centre at 416-392-1250 for immunization reporting or questions.  For newcomer families, we offer free translation of foreign immunization records and immunization clinics for students with no health card.
Thank you for your ongoing support to keep all children healthy in school by promoting our services.
