2019 High School Conference ‘Exceeding Expectations’ Scholarship Application  – Community Engagement

The Black Students’ Association’s Community Engagement Scholarship honours African-Canadian youth who have demonstrated leadership and active participation in their communities. This scholarship is only open to grade 12 students. Ten successful candidates will each receive a $1000 scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria:
An African-Canadian Student who is:
  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
  • Currently enrolled in high school as a full-time student for the 2018/19 school year
  • Planning to attend school on a full-time basis at an accredited university or college, or enrolled in a recognized apprenticeship program in Fall 2019
  • Preference will be given to University of Toronto applicants
  • Upon acceptance of this scholarship, proof of admission to post-secondary the program will be required
  • Making a recognized positive contribution through civic engagement and/or volunteer experience
Application Requirements:
  • Scholarship application form signed by the applicant
  • A 500-1000 word personal statement describing the reasons why you deem yourself a worthy recipient of this scholarship. Please make reference to your academic, community, and extracurricular achievements and contributions.
  • One reference letter (i.e. teachers, community organizers, etc.,) including contact information
  • An up-to-date official transcript
  • Additional materials such as publications, testimonials, media stories, etc. may be submitted as long as it is relevant and provides new information about the applicant’s community involvement



  • All applications and supporting documents must be received by April, 15th 2019. Emailed documents should be sent in PDF format and e-mailed to with the title “HSC Scholarship Application”. Mailed or submitted applications must be sent to 40 Willcocks Street, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 1C6 and addressed to the Black Students’ Association

  • All package components must be sent together. Partial or incomplete submissions will not be accepted or considered.
  • Originals of any documents will not be returned
  • The granting of all scholarships are conditional upon acceptance into a post-secondary
    education program and attendance of the conference
