Supplement to the Governor General’s Academic Medal:  open to students from Msgr. Percy Johnson Catholic High School

A graduating student at Msgr. Percy Johnson C.H.S. who receives the Governor General’s Medal will be eligible for a $500 award donated by Dr. Meivys Garcia-Erdeljan to supplement the student’s tuition at a post-secondary institution. The Governor General’s Academic Medal, awarded by the Province of Ontario, was established in 1873.  It recognizes students who have achieved the highest academic average in all Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses.
Dr. Garcia-Erdeljan, or her designate, is to be invited to present the awards at the school’s annual graduation ceremony.  If for any reason, the award is to be discontinued, any remaining principal amount and interest accrued will be deposited to the school’s outside agencies account, to be used at the principal’s discretion.
Dr. Garcia-Erdeljan and her husband created this award as a way to give back to the community and honour the Monsignor Johnson Catholic High School tradition of encouraging students to achieve their dreams. Dr. Garcia-Erdeljan came to Canada in 1994 with big dreams and very little means. The Monsignor Johnson community, especially Mr. Raco and Mrs. Galati, welcomed her with open arms and really helped her to accomplish her dreams. She says that she”went from a very shy and afraid individual when I first entered the school in January of 1995 to graduating with top honour with the governor's general medal in 1997.” She says that she has been very fortunate and blessed to have some many people, including the teachers at Monsignor Johnson, guide her in her path and support her in her dreams.
