The Lucy Connolly Endowment in the Sciences Scholarship

 Principal and interest on a donation of $3,000 from Patricia Connolly, as well as any further contributions, are to be used to provide for two annual awards of $1,500 each to eligible students from Michael Power/St. Joseph High School and Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School and are accepted into a program in the Sciences (chemistry/biology/physics) at a Canadian post-secondary institution. The scholarship is in memory of Lucy Connolly, a former science teacher for the TCDSB, most recently at Michael Power/St. Joseph High School and previously the Department Head of Science at Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School. (see Appendix “A”)

 
Regulations

  1. ​A principal amount of $3,000 or such amount as reported annually shall be maintained in the current accounts of the Board.

  2. An annual award of no less than $1500 each will be given to a graduating student from Michael Power/St. Joseph High School and a graduating student from Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School who have excelled in the sciences (chemistry/biology/physics) and provide proof of enrolment in a science-related program at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

  3. The Lucy Connolly Endowment in the Sciences Scholarship shall be awarded to graduating students from both Michael Power/St. Joseph High School and Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School who meet the following criteria:

    - Preference will be given to students who exhibit a strong interest in science and an appreciation of science.  Academic standing, with a focus on the sciences (chemistry/biology/physics), shall be considere​d.

    - The student will also have a record of significant contribution to the school community, especially in areas related to the sciences and will possess attributes that Lucy Connolly aimed to instill in her own students such as compassion, honesty, faithfulness and a love of science.

    - The student is held in high esteem within the school community and epitomizes the mission of Michael Power/St. Joseph High School/Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School.Financial need, in the broad sense, may be considered as a “tie breaker” in the event that there are a number of students who demonstrate academic merit.

  4. The final selection of the recipient will be made by a Selection Committee from each school comprised of:  the principal, in consultation with the school’s Science Department staff and the Connolly family (unless and until they otherwise request).

  5. An award letter will be presented during each school’s annual graduation/closing ceremonies.  The Connolly family, unless and until they otherwise request, shall be invited to present the award letters to the recipients.

  6. A perpetual plaque listing the names of recipients of the award shall be displayed and maintained at Michael Power High School and Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School.

  7. The distribution of the cash award is contingent upon submission of proof of enrolment in the Sciences at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

  8. If, for any reason, the award is to be discontinued, any remaining principal amount and interest accrued will be given, in Lucy Connolly’s honour, to the Canadian Cancer Society.
