Peter (Petras) Balciunas Memorial Award

The award is in memory of the late Peter (Petras) Balciunas, retired TCDSB principal, most recently at Richard W. Scott Catholic School. The award is to encourage and support a teacher candidate in the pursuit of studies in preparation for teaching in a Catholic school.
An annual award equivalent to one year’s tuition for the York University Faculty of Education program at the Catholic Education Centre site will be given to a student who:
  • provides proof of graduation from a Toronto Catholic District School Board secondary school
  • is a Teacher Candidate in the York University Faculty of Education – Catholic Education Centre site; and
  • demonstrates commitment to and involvement in Catholic education.
Financial need will be taken into consideration by the Selection Committee. 
An award letter and cheque will be presented to the recipient in March by the York University Faculty of Education – Catholic Education Centre.  Mrs. Balciunas or her designate will be invited to present the cheque and letter to the recipient. A wall plaque will be maintained at the Catholic Education Centre York Campus for the purpose of displaying the names of recipients of the award.
Application Process:
  1. The distribution of the cash award is contingent upon submission of:
    i. a letter of reference outlining the student’s commitment to Catholic education;
    ii.  a letter of reference from a member of the community in good standing;
    iii. a letter of reference from the student’s current Pastor;
    iv. a copy of the student’s résumé;
    v. proof of graduation from a TCDSB secondary school (letter, copy of transcript or diploma, etc.)
    vi. a 500-word essay on the topic “Why I have chosen to be a Catholic school teacher.”  The essay should include a brief autobiography, describing the applicant’s journey to the decision to become a teacher;
    vii. proof of financial need (if applicable);
    viii. signed information release form to allow TCDSB to publicly release the applicant’s name, photograph and accomplishments should he or she win the award (see attached)
