Toronto Catholic District School Board

Reach Ahead into the World of Capital Markets …

32 students from 5 different schools did just this on Friday November 23rd!

When schools partner with community organizations, opportunities for learning outside of the classroom are created.  This was the case for thirty-two lucky young women from our board on Friday November 23rd.
Thirty two of our TCDSB grade 12 and 11 students from five high schools (Madonna CSS, Loretto Abbey CSS, Loretto College School, Senator O’Connor CS and Msg Percy Johnson CSS) participated in a TD Securities Women in Leadership Event, A Day in the Life.  The day’s objective was to increase the awareness of the career opportunities in the capital markets industry to a younger generation of female students.  The day accomplished this and so much more.
Most of the students came as part of their Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program.  SHSM programs offer students in grade 11 and 12 the opportunity to explore a specific area or career of interest and to acquire the skills and experience that will assist them in their post-secondary pathway.
Activities during the day included:
• learning about the career paths of women who have chosen the financial sector
• networking
• learning about capital markets industry
• a visit to the trading floor
Throughout the day, our students had the chance to explore the four important questions:
• Who am I?
• What are my opportunities?
• What are my plans for achieving my goals?
• Who do I want to become?

Here are what some of the students had to say about the day:
The financial sector has more opportunities than just banking and accounting …”
I didn’t know there were so many opportunities within the financial sector for women …”
The panel was fantastic – I especially loved the tone set by the speakers … they spoke about the culture at TD and how people make the job!”
Each TD speaker gave me a different perspective and it was interesting listening about their experience and about their roles … this will allow me to understand more about financial area. I am glad that I came here.”
"This experience was great; I learned that there are a lot of different fields in business even in banks that a lot of people are not aware of.”
It is all about hard work … just because another person is smart with high marks does not mean that your hard work won’t be your biggest strength.”
Networking is the best way to succeed in life, having different experiences is a way to reach your dream job; the dream job that when you wake up every morning you can’t wait to go and start work.”
