“The conference supports our efforts to improve parental engagement and provide an inclusive curriculum. Together, we are helping students reach their full potential” – Toronto Catholic District School Board Director Angela Gauthier
Toronto 40% of Latin American youth do not finish high school.  This year we will be acting in solidarity as concerned youth, parents, community members, and educators to improve the learning experiences of Latin American youth and ensure the success of our community.
The Latin American Education Network ( is a network of organizations, parents, youth, and individuals who have the collective vision for a united and strengthened Latin American community in Toronto supported by a network of diverse educational initiatives. The network is pleased to present its 3rd annual conference on Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 9:30am to 3:30pm, at St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary School.  This conference will occur in partnership with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF), Ontario English Catholic Teachers Federation (OECTA), and various organizations serving the local Latin American community.
Parents, youth, community members and educators will come together to engage with the education system as individuals and an organized community. The conference will open with an exhibition of various initiatives and services offered to and from our community.  In past years we have had over 20 organizations set-up information booths during this time.  Recently elected trustees in both school boards along with senior staff members will then be invited at the end of the conference to listen to our results.  This conference is FROM our community, FOR our community.  Together and united, we will then learn about how to work with local schools and, at a larger level, with the school boards.  This space is a platform to engage in dialogue about our experiences in schools and create an action plan to improve them.  The support network that is created will continue with the action plan and its growth to ensure its implementation.   Each group will create plans and goals about how to influence their education.

Emceeing this year is TCDSB student, Gabriela Argueta, who stresses: “The LAEN conference is important to keep all educators, students, and parents on the same page of action in our education system. Not only being informed, but speaking to others and determining ideas to help [Latino]-Hispanic-Canadians in schools can be done in this conference.”
TDSB teacher, Derik Chica, says: “This is a very important conference in our community where school boards will listen to what we have to say about the education system.  We will come in solidarity as a diverse Latin American community living in Toronto”.
