Toronto Catholic District School Board

TCDSB Raises Pan Am Spirit!

The Toronto Catholic District School Board hosted an action-packed, multicultural, multimedia event aimed at raising the Pan Am and Parapan Am spirit for students on February 25th at The Hangar in Downsview Park.  Over 500 students and educators from the TCDSB, Dufferin/Peel Catholic DSB and Halton CDSB participated in “Pan Am Celebration Day”.
Students and teachers engaged in Pan  Am/Parapan Am sport demonstrations to get  a taste of what is to come this summer when  the province plays host to the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Pan Am/Parapan Am Kids (PPAKids) provided the program resources.  They are delivering a program  to all school boards, in partnership with the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am /Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015), The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and the Ministry of Education.
Students participated in the some of the activities included within the PPAKids program including: Sitting Volleyball gives students the challenge of the parasport; Fast Break Lacrosse introduces lacrosse skills; Athletics Relay uses a giant “hop scotch” grid made of hoola hoops to test accuracy, agility and teamwork.
Visiting Athletes:
Pan Am/Parpan Am athlete Alexandra Orlando (Rhythmic Gymnast), Mary Spencer (Boxer – Pan Am hopeful) and Chelsey Gotell (Swimmer) shared their athletic dreams with students.
Performances by the Jean Vanier Marching Band, St. Paschal Baylon students,  dancers from Father John Redmond, Blessed Mother Teresa and Cardinal Carter entertained the large audience.  During lunch time, Gymnastics Canada performed routines by acrobats.
The National Film board offered students an opportunity to learn how to create their own action video.
Educators participated in salsa classes and carnival mask making.
A special video message, taped by Jean Vanier for the occasion, was played for the audience:

The TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games will take place July 10–26 and the Parapan American Games August 7–15.  The TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015) is tasked with managing and delivering the Games. It is working to bring some of the world’s best athletes and artists to the City of Toronto and Greater Golden Horseshoe region, giving Ontarians a unique chance to be part of the action, and making the region a hub for sport.
