TCDSB Students on Track for Loran Scholarship


Student Trustee, Allison Gacad, was selected to receive a Loran Scholarship, joining the 27th class of Loran Scholars. She was selected from over 4,273 applicants from across Canada.  Renewable for up to four years, with a total value of up to $100,000, each Loran Award includes an annaul stipend of $9,000 and matching tuition waiver, access to funding and internships through the summer program, invitations to annual gatherings and forums and one-on-one mentorship.
Daria Mancino from Blessed Cardinal Newman and Immaculate Heart of Mary, is receiving a $2,000 Loran Provincial Award.  Allison currently attends St. John Paul II C.S.S. and went to St. Edmund Campion Catholic School. Congratulation to Allison and Daria as well as their families and school communities.  

Allison Gacad, St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School

Through the school environmental council, Allison organized a mining justice petition and initiated a workshop series for elementary school students. She mentors fellow high school students on issues of ecological conservation and organized a district-wide "civvies" day to raise funds for the school board charity. Allison also serves as a student trustee, plays piano, and writes for the school newspaper. Last summer, she worked as a camp counsellor.

Daria Mancino, Blessed Cardinal Newman Secondary School

Daria co-founded the school newspaper and serves as captain of a 40-member rugby team. She helped organize an overnight retreat for more than 200 Grade 9 students. Daria also helped to start the school's gay-straight alliance and collected 500 signatures for a petition for gender-neutral product labels. She is a certified lifeguard and works part-time at a restaurant.
