About the TCDSB Chess Association

In its twelve years of consolidated, organised tournaments, the Toronto Catholic District School Board Chess Association shares the vision of the Board to:

  • Support our students in achieving academic excellence and meeting the Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations;
  • Use evidence-based teaching and learning strategies to provide students opportunities to become discerning believers, effective communicators, reflective thinkers, self-directed learners, collaborative contributors, caring family members and responsible citizens;
  • Support our students’ ability to apply critical and innovative thinking in all subjects;
  • Strive to ensure that the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs of all students are met;
  • Provide all students with safe, healthy learning environments by promoting a positive school climate, inclusive and accepting of all pupils, and by promoting the prevention of bullying.

The Association runs fifteen tournaments per year which are divided into three broad categories:

  • Girls only tournaments
  • Open tournaments
  • Team tournaments

We run all three tournaments at the Regional level in the north, south, east and west of our board.  These serve as qualifiers to our city tournaments.  The top four competitors from each grade in the Girls and Open tournament are invited to the City tournaments.

*Please note that each tournament costs $30.00.  Therefore,  $90.00 covers the cost of three tournaments for the season.   This fee helps defray the cost of the ribbons, trophies, medals and pennants.

The City tournaments are by invitation only, through our qualifiers.  The top four from each grade (from grade 1 to grade 8) receive an invitation to go on outside the Board to the Chess N Math provincial tournament, which is Sunday, April 17. In turn that organisation has the top competitors from each province compete at the national level.

For any other information contact Peter Bernotas, teacher and president of the Toronto Catholic District Board Chess Association at 416-460-7089.

For your information we are enclosing our schedule and you can click here to read some published materials on the benefits of learning chess.

* A team consists of up to 8 players but only 5 players will play in a round.  Coaches are able to rotate players at the start of every round.  See team play regulations further in booklet.
