Toronto Catholic District School Board

Newcomer Student Leadership Conference

The Toronto Catholic District School Board welcomed over 200 Canadian newcomer youth at a conference focusing on student leadership on Friday, October 20th at the Catholic Education Centre. The event was designed to draw out the inner leader in newcomer students and equip them with the tools and knowledge to lead and support their peers and fellow newcomers at their school.

TCDSB Director of Education Rory McGuckin offered opening remarks, challenging students to draw out their inner leader and bring those leadership qualities to their homes and schools. Jeah Mae Banico, TCDSB student and the subject of a CBC Hot Docs documentary “My First 150 Days” shared her own personal newcomer story with participants ahead of the morning workshop breakout session.

Morning and afternoon workshops focused on bringing diverse experiences and leadership into the school environment. During the lunch hour, students enjoyed a student-led talent show. It was a great day of learning, team and friendship building, and inspiration for all.
