Toronto Catholic District School Board

Digital Literacy Week

May 27 - June 1, 2019

During the week of May 27-June 1, the City of Toronto in partnership with the Toronto Public Library, Toronto District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, and many other organizations will be celebrating Digital Literacy Week.

Digital Literacy is an essential skill for individual empowerment, participation in society and improved livelihood. As the educational needs of society evolve, we must prepare for these changes so that all Torontonians can have the chance to succeed in a digital economy. Digital Literacy Week builds on the success of last year’s first-ever Digital Literacy Day in Toronto. Across the city, it showcases free digital and technology programs and services. During this week we celebrate Toronto’s innovative and digitally-inclusive organizations and how they help Torontonians of all ages connect to opportunities.

The events showcase digital learning, eLearning, coding, STEAM education, 21st Century Learning, digital citizenship, internet safety, and media literacy. In addition to the student focused events in classrooms, we will host an event for parents and a keynote address on Computational Thinking that will be available to all schools. Mayor John Tory Proclamation

Whereas technology fundamentally changes the way we live, work, learn and play; digital literacy is now necessary to navigate this transformation.

Literacy is an essential skill for individual empowerment, participation in society and improved livelihood. As the educational needs of society evolve, we must prepare for these changes so that all Torontonians can have the chance to succeed in a digital economy.

Digital Literacy Week showcases free digital and technology programs and services available across the city, libraries and in our schools, and online. It also celebrates Toronto's innovative and digitally-inclusive organizations and the important work they do in helping Toronto residents stay connected.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor John Tory, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim May 27 - June 1, 2019 as "Digital Literacy Week" in the City of Toronto.
