Toronto Catholic District School Board

TCDSB Mourns Loss of Dr. Anthony BArone
Former Director of Education

The Toronto Catholic District School Board is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Dr. Anthony J. Barone, former Director of Education.

Dr. Barone, the Board’s third Director of Education, served the Metropolitan Separate School Board from 1988 to 1996. He had dedicated a lifetime to the Catholic school board, starting as a student at St. Cecilia Catholic School, which may have prompted him to pursue a career in education.

He taught at St. Anthony Catholic School, and later served as vice-principal at St. Mary Catholic before becoming the Coordinator of English as a Second Language. From that central role, he became Supervising Principal, Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent and Deputy Director prior to his appointment as Director of Education.

“This is a tremendous loss to all of us at TCDSB, and to the Catholic community,” says Director of Education Rory McGuckin. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, many of whom have continued the legacy of service to Catholic education in the City of Toronto. He will be missed by those who had the privilege of working with him throughout his career.”

“Dr. Barone was a strong leader who commanded the respect of his colleagues,” says TCDSB Chair Barbara Poplawski. “He helped steer the Board through some critical moments in history including coordinating ESL during the peak immigration years of the 1960s. He also planned and negotiated the shared use of facilities with the coterminous public school boards during the 1970s and helped with the implementation of Bill 30 during the 1980s.”

Dr. Barone passed away on September 25, 2018. Visitation will be held September 27th 3-5
p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Newediuk Funeral Home (Kipling Chapel) http://www.newediukfuneralhome.com/Kipling_Chapel_SM.html. Funeral Mass is scheduled for September 28th at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Etobicoke
